Description

C. J. CARLSON AND A. W; LARSON. EXTENSIBLE POLE. APPLICATION man MAY24,1920'.
INVENTORS CHARLES J. .canrlson AND ALBERT w. Laas'on, or sEA'r'rnn, wnsnnvcroiv.
nxrnnsrnnn ronn.
Application filed May 24,
mentary rod members connected by bands for relative "longitudinal movementsand clamp- Y ing means carried by one of the'said bands and engageable with both of the rod members forsecuring the rod in operative position.
The invention in its form now preferred by us is illustrated in the accompanying draw- 'ings, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevational view of the rod, shown applied. Fig. '2 is afront elevational view of the same, shown partly in section, with the clamping devices in disengaged positions. Fig. 2 with the clamping devices shownen-v gaged to the rod members. Fig. t is a plan. view of Fig. 3. v
In carrying on a rod proper consisting of two members-5 and 6 having cylindrical outer end portions 5 and 6 and semicylindrical,innerportions 5 and 6 which are connected bybands 7 and 8.
The band 7 is secured to the rod portion 5 near the extremity of the latter by a brad or screw 9 and is slidable upon the portion 6 of the other rod member.
The band 8 is freely slidable upon the rod portion 5 and also upon the rod portion 6 to an extent limited by the movement afforded in a slot 10 of the band 8 to a stud 11 which extends into said slot from the rod portion 6 Extending from the band 8 beyond the adjacent end of the rod part 6 are ears 12 through apertures of which extends a pin 13. This pin serves as a pivotal support for a substantially U-shaped dog 14L having its lower end serrated to provide teeth 15 which are adapted to engage in the upper surface 16 of the rod part '5 The pin 13 furthermore serves as a fulcrum for a lever 17 having a cam arm 18 adapted to engage against Fig. 3 is a view similar to p I v hands of the operator to extend between the t our invention we provide Specification of Letters Patent. Patgntgd ma 9;
1920. Serial No. 383,614.
a wearing plate 19 seoured to the extremity of the rod part 6 to force the rod members 5 and 6 in opposite directions when the lever is brought from its Fig. 2 position into its Fig. 3 position and subsequent to the dog 14 engaglng in the rod part 5 When this occurs the band 8 is held by the dog and the rod member 6 moved within the band and also with respect to the rod member 5. To disengage the dog from the rod member 5 the cam lever is moved from the position in which it is shown in Fig. 3 to that in. which it is shown in Fig. 2, resulting inthe leverva-rm :18 engaging the dogto swing the same from its engagement v'vith the rod part 5 and en able the two members to be slidably moved to To the outer'extremities of the rod parts 7 it Sland 6 are secured bodies 20, of a resilient materlal, as rubber for example,"'which preshorten or extend the effectivelength of the i vents the rod from marringthe w'allsurfaces i 21 against which the ends" of the rod abut.
The bodies 20; by being of resilient material yields sufficiently to accommodate the move? 6 with respect to the ments of the rod member ban'd8 after the rod has been'adjusted in the ing the rod the operator pushes downward with' his finger the dog into engageable posi-.
tion with the rod part and coincidentally elfects a relatively small-movement to the rod 6 through the medium of the cam lever to temporarily retain the rod in place.
The operator thereupon moves the cam lever into theposition in which it is represented in Figs. 1 and 3 whereby the rod is further extended to effect the clamping of the same between the walls.-
The'rod is readily applied or disconnected and provides a secure and rigid device from which articles may be conveniently suspended.
What we claim is' p In an extensible rod, the combination with a rod-member, a second rod-member connected thereto for relative longitudinal movement, of a band surrounding both of said members, said band being provided with a slot, astud protruding from the first named member into said slot to limit the longitudinal movement of such'member with respect to said band, a dog, a pin pivotally connecting the dog to said band in clamping relation with respect to the second named member, and a cam lever fulcrumed to said pin and engageable with the first named'member, 01'
" with s aid'do'gs, selectively, to respectively efleet the extension of the rod 01' the disengageme'nt 0f the dog from the second named member.
Signed at Seattle, Washirigton, this'l3th day of May, 1920.
