HARRY R. CALEF, OF DECATUR, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO UNITED STATES WIREVMAT COMPANY, OF DECATUR, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
BOX R CARTON.
To all 'Lv/wm t may Concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY R. CALEF, a citizen of the United States, a resident of Decatur, in the county of Macon and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Boxes or Cartons, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in box or carton, and the principal object is the 0 provision of a box or carton which may be utilized for the carrying, shipment and the transportation of articles and also for the display of the articles.
A further object of this invention is the 5 provision of a box or vcarton made of cardboard or similar material, having a plurality of slots provided in corresponding parts of the blanks so that when the blanks are assembled, the slots may be utilized to D support the articles which were transported 5 nation, construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and then sought to be defined in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part hereof, and which shows merely for the purpose of illustrative disclosure, a preferred embodiment of my invention, it being understood that various changes may be made in practice within the scope of the claims without digressing from 5 my inventive idea.
In the drawings:
Figure l represents a perspective view of a box or carton constructed so as to embody my invention, several articles being shown i therein in display position.
Fig. 2 represents a plan view of the top blank of the box or carton.
Fig. 3 represents a plan view of the bottom blank of the box or carton. i Referring now to thedrawings, the 11umeral 1 designates the blank for the top of the box or carton and the numeral 2 the blank for the bottom of the box or carton. These blanks are stamped in theusual form, having the end securing lugs 3 fitting in the slots 4 and provided with ythe grooves 5 along which the blanks may be folded, so as to assemble the blanks in the form of a comlete box or carton. While I have shown a i' lank paste board. or card board box or Specification of Letters Patent. Patnted May 20, 1919,

carton, it is to be understoodl that I may use a receptacle of any suitable material'and of any size or shapev or conformation.
At various places near the folded lines or grooves 5, in both the top and bottom blanks for the box or carton, I provide the slots 6. These may be arranged along the side folds and end folds and any number of the slots may be provided according to the relative size of the article to be carried within the box or carton and also according to the number of articles it is Adesired to display. These slots 6 are merely straight slots being the simplest form of carrying out my invention. It is to be expressly understood that the size and shape of these slots may be varied according to the uses to which t-he receptacle is to be put, or rather according to the articles it is desired to have displayed. Accordingly I have illustrated other forms of slots, such as the cross-shaped slot 7 and the channel shaped slot 8. In the bottom of the box I 'may also use achannel shaped slot 9 which provides a flap, as shown. These different forms of slots will permit the ready display of devices having larger handles than those shown in Fig. 1 of t-he drawing.
The box or carton is utilized for the shipment or transportation of the; articles in the first instance, and when received by the dealer or user, the articles may be held in an upright position by passin a portion thereof, through the correspon ing slots in the top and bottom parts of the box or carton. In this way, the box or carton forms an eiicient and simple display stand for the articles which have been shipped therein.
This invention is capable of many uses and for the display of various articles, but is particularly adapted for the use of articles having handles, such as fly killers, and the like. These have been illustrated in place in the box or carton, but it is to berunderstood that other Ydevices may be displayed and that the .sizes and shapes of the slots may be varied to accommodate the articles of different natures, as previouslyy described.
The box orA cartonmay be made of cardboard or paste-boardA or any other suitable material, these materials being merely men-v tioned as illustrative.
What I claim is l l. ,A combined shi ping and displaying box or carton incluang top and bottom blank portions having means whereby they may be assembled to form the telescopic parts of a complete box or carton, each of said blank portions having a plurality of slots provided therein and corresponding in position to each other so that an article may be displayed by having a portion thereof passed through the corresponding slots, whereby it is held in an upright display position, the assembled box or carton being `adapted to contain the articles for shipment.
2. A box or carton of the character described, including top and bottom blank portions having means for folding and assembling the same so that they may be telescopically arranged to form a complete box, the top portion being provided with a plurality of slots and the bottom portion being provided with a plurality of slots in the side portions thereof corresponding to the slots in the top portion, whereby articles may be passed through the slots in the top and in the sides of the bottom member and thus held in a display position.
3. A combined shipping and display receptacle including top, bottom and side portions, said top and side portions having a plurality of slots provided therein in corresponding position so that an article may be held in said receptacle for display by passing a portion thereof through corresponding slots in said top and side portions, said receptacle being adapted to contain the articles for shipment.
4. A combined shipping and display re-l ceptacle adapted to receive articles for shipment including a top, sides and a bottom, the top being removable and havin a plurality of slots provided adjacent t e edge thereof, the sides also having a plurality of slots corresponding in arrangement to the slots in the top, whereby an article will be` held in display position when passed through the corresponding slots in the top and sides of the receptacle.
5. A box composed of folded blank top and bottom members, each having side members extending vertically from the top and bottom surfaces thereof, said top and bottom members being adapted to be telescopically arranged relative to each other, a plurality of slots formed in the top portion of said top member and a plurality of slots corresponding to the slots in said top portion, formed in the side portions of said bottom member, said box being adapted to contain articles for shipment or transportation and said slots providing meansV for displaying the articles, part of the articles being passed through the corresponding slots in the top portion of the top member and the side portion of the bottom member.
6. A box including a top and bottom member, each having side portions and adapted to be telescopically arranged to receive articles therein for transportation, the side portions of the top member fitting over the side portions of the bottom member, a plurality of slots provided in the top part of the top member adjacent the edge thereof, a plurality of slots provided in the side portions of the bottom member corresponding in position to the slots in the top portion of the top member, whereby articles may be displayed by passing part thereof through one of the slots in the top portion of the top member underneath the side portion thereof and through the `slot in the side portion of the bottom member.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto affixed my hand this 20th day of September, 1917.
HARRY R. CALEF.
