To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN M. TOBIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county-of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Nasal Nozzles, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention pertains to means for applying salves, medicated semi-liquids and ointments to the nasal passages.
The object of the invention is the provimovement, the nozzle being entirely free of any feature calculated to injure the lining or other part of the nose.
The invention in all of its details will be fully understood from the following 'description and claim when the same are read in connection with the drawings, accompanying and forming part of this specification, in which:
Figure 1 is an enlarged elevation showing a nozzle constructed according to my invention as applied to a collapsible tube or container.
Fig. 2 is a similar view with the nozzle in diametrical section.
Fig. 3 is a transverse section, taken in the plane indicated by the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the views of the drawings.
The collapsible tube or container 1 and its reduced and threaded portion 2 are not, of course, of my invention, and are merely shown herein as part of a practical and desirable embodiment.
My improved nozzle 3 may be formed of metal, hard-rubber or other material compatible with its purpose, and may be provided with a longitudinal-central bore 4:, of even diameter throughout, as shown, or may be made hollow or chambered in the discretion of the manufacturer. At its upper end the said nozzle is interiorly threaded, as in dicated by 5, for the reception of the threaded shank 6 of a closure screw 7 the head of which is preferably roughened on its perimeter as illustrated.
The nozzle 3 may exteriorly beof any suitable shape in cross-section, and it is peculiar and advantageous in that its upper portion is exteriorly tapered toward its upper or outer end and is slightly convex in the direction of its length. It is within the purview of my invention to make the nozzle 3 integral with the container on which it is used, though I prefer to have the nozzle detachable as shown, this because it permits of the nozzle being made of material other than that of the container and also permits of the repeated use of the nozzle on many containers.
The upper or outer longitudinally tapered exterior portion of the nozzle is numbered 3", and by virtue of the same it will be appreciated that the nozzle is adapted to dilate a nasal passage while hermetically scaling the vestibule of the passage; also, that while effecting the said dilation and thereby assuring the application of medicated semiliquid or other substance well up the nasal passage, the nozzle does not contact with and therefore is not liable to injure the mucous lining of the passage, this being due in a measure to the convexity of the portion 3*. Moreover it will be understood that by rea son of the shape of the nozzle portion 3*, the nozzle is adapted to retain itself in the vestibule of the nasal passage so that the medicine or cream may be conveniently administered with one hand and without liability of injuring the user.
The nozzle closure employed manifestly leaves the outer side of the nozzle perfectly smooth so that there is nothing about my novel nozzle that is liable to injure the nose in the event of the user being caused to suddenly move incidental to the administration of medicine through the medium of the nozzle.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
