JOHN B. KENNY, OF GENEVA, NEW YORK.
LEAD-PENCIL.
Application filed January 27, 1908.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN B. KENNY, a citizen of the United States, resident of Geneva, in the county of Ontario and State of New York, have made a certain-new and useful Invention in Lead-Pencils; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, `and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it ap ertai-ns to make and use the invention, re erence being had to theaccompanying drawings, and to letters or fi res of reference marked thereon, which orm a part of this specification. Y
l Figure 1 is a central longitudinal section of the invention as applied. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the rubber ti almost entirely exposed. Fig. 3 is a simi ar view showing the rubber tip entirely inclosed. Fig. 4 is a side view of the invention as applied. Fig. 5 is a central longitudinal section of a modified form of the invention. l
The invention h'as relation to lead pencils provided with tips of rubber or other erasing material, and has for its object the provision of means in connection with such a tip whereby. it may be entirely used in erasing and whereby it may be protected when not 1n use. p
Other objects and advantages will hereinafter a pear.
In tie accompanying drawings, illustrating the invention,l the letter a, designates a lead encil and b, its rubber ti cure to the end of the pencilp manner. I
c, is a short sleeve of thinv metal which is secured upon the end portion of the pencil a short distance from its termination, in any suitable manner, the s ace between the end of the encil and the s eeve being marked c. This s eeve is provided with an external screw thread c2, running throughout its length,.and fitting thereover in engagement therewith is a longer internally threaded' sleeve d, also of thin metal and having at its outer end an inward extending annular flange e, provided with a short sleeve extension f, of the same diameter as the short sleeve c, and capable of close engagement with the rubber tip, whose external diameter in the usual .is the same as the internal' diameter ofthe Specification of Letters Patent.

sleeve extension. The thread of the sleeve d, extends from its inner end to the Iinward extending flange thereof, and the length of the short sleeve extension is the saineV or about the same as the length of the interval c', `between the end of the pencil and the short sleeve c,
In'the use of the device, the rubber tip is normally protected or entirely inclosed at its sides, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. As the rubber or erasing material is used, the outer or longer sleeve d, is gradually turned down upon the pencil until the sleeve extension f, thereof will lie in the interval c', between the end of the pencil and the short sleeve c, as shown in Fig.- 2, when the last remaining portion of the erasing material may be employed. At the same time the short sleeve extension f, will always have close bracing engagement with the rubber ti pIn Fig. 5 of the drawings is shown a modified form of the invention wherein the inner sleeve x, is made longer and is of rotary character, being confined at eachend by bands y, y, fixed u` on the pencil. the device t e movement of the outer sleeve for the purpose already described is effected by turnin the inner sleeve by means of the thin knur ed or milled fiange e, at, the lower end thereof. The device is otherwise `the same as in the main form of the invention.
Having described the invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: A
1; The combination with a lead pencil having a rubber tip, of an inner fixed sleeve provided throughout its length with an external screw thread, an outer internally threaded adjustable sleeve having engagement with said inner sleeve, and provided at its outer end with an annular inward extending flange having a bracinor cylindrical sleeve extension of an internal diameter which is the same as the diameter ofthe rubber tip and capable of close bracin engagement with said tip.
2. The com ination with a lead pencil having a rubber tip, of an inner sleeve sep- In this form of arated from the end of the pencil by an interval, and provided throughout its length with an internal screw thread, an outer externally threaded sleeve having engagement with said inner sleeve and provided at its outer P In teetimony whereof I aix my signature, end with an annular mward extending flange presence of two Witnesses. having a short sleeve extension of the same diameter as the inner sleeve, capable of close JOHN B KENNY 5 engagement with the rubber tip, and of be- Witnesses:
