Beit known that I, FRANK L. ROUSSEAU, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook .and State of Illinois, have invented certain new andy useful Improvements in Pencils, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a pencil which has a channel or bore therein to receive the4 lead and which has at the lower end of said pencil a clutch member adapted to retain the lead in'said channel or bore; furthermore, to provide a sleeve with internal screw-threads having a longitudinal ex tension adapted to fit over the upper end of thepencil and the extension thereof adapted of the lead, as will be hereinafter more fiully described.
Figure 1 is an elevation of my improved pencil. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section thereof, showing the sleeve on the pencil and the extension engaging the lead. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the sleeve on an enlarged scale. Fig. 4 is a sectional detail of the clutch member.
The body orcasing 1 is formed of wood or Y other suitable material and is pointed at one end. Said casing is provided with a bore 2, which is adapted to receive the lead 3. The lead 3 is prevented from falling out of the bore 2 by reason of the clutch member 4, which is formed of rubber or other flexible material and ri idly secured in the point of the casing 1. sleeve 5, provided with internal screw-threads 6, is adapted to fit over the u per end of the pencil. A thimble 7 provi ed with the longitudinal extension 8, is snugly fitted into the upper end of the sleeve 5. Said sleeve is also provided with thev slot 9, which will enable said sleeve to fit snugly on the casing 1. A rubber or eraser 10 is secured into the thimble 7.
When the sleeve 5 is screwed onto the cas* Y ing 1, the external screw-threads 6 on said sleeve will cut threads on the casing 1. The longitudinal extension 6 will pass into the bore 2 and come in contact with the lead 3. Thus it will be ap arent that by turning the sleeve 5 to the rig t the lead 3 will be forced forward. The backward movement of the lead 3 will be prevented by reason of the screw-threads 6 on the sleeve 5, which prevents the sleeve from being movedeither upward or downward unless said sleeve is turned, and the clutch member 4 will prevent the lead 3 from passing too far forward. When the sleeve 5 has been turned so far that the up er end of the pencil comes in contact with tlie thimble 7 and the lead 3 fails to protrude through the .point of the casing 1, the sleeve l5 is unscrewed from the casing 1 and theupper portion of said casing, which bears the screw-threads 6, may be cut ofi` and the sleeve 5 again screwed onto the casing 1. This operation willbe repeated until the entire pencil has been used. It will be apparent that no sharpening of the pencil will be necessary; but if the lead 3 does not extend far enough beyond the point of the casingl by turning the sleeve 5 once or twice the lead 3 will be forced out the desired length.
Slight changes can of course be made in the general form of construction and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention. Hence I do not wish to be limited to the exact construction herein set forth.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- A dpencil comprising a casing, having alongitu 'nal bore, leads therein, a clutch member of soft pliable material, havin(r an aper` ture intermediate thereof, adapted to be secured in the oint of the casing, said aperture being of smailer diameter than the leads, thus preventing said leads from falling out of the bore of the pencil, a sleeve provided with internalscrew-threads adapted to cut threads on the exterior surface of the casing when secured thereon, a thimble secured in the upper end of the said sleeve, a longitudinal extension rigidly secured to the inner end of said 'thimble, and when said sleeve, with the extension secured thereon, is'screwed ontothe casing, .the extension will fit into the bore of the pencil and force the lead therein out through the clutch member in the point of the casing.
