Description
MERTON W. JOHNSON, OF ASSU'IVIPTION, ILLINOIS.
SEMEN-EXTRACTOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 24, 1912.
Application filed April 27, 1912. Serial No. 693,592.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, MEn'roN W. JonNsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Assumption, in the county of Christian and State of Illinois, have invented. certain new and useful Improvements in Semen-Extractors, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention comprehends certain new and useful improvements in semen extractors and has for its primary object to provide an instrument of this nature which shall be simple in structure and efcient in operation.
Another object of the invention is to provide an instrument so designed as to prevent the folds of the internal organs of the animal on which the device is being used from being drawn in and clogging the. entrance to the tube through which the semen is withdrawn.
The invention also aims to generally improve devices of this nature to render them more useful and commercially desirable.
With these and other objects in view, as shall become apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain structures and arrangement of parts as I shall hereinafter fully describe and claim.
For a complete understanding of the invention reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my device complete, Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the extractor proper', and Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on line 3 3 of Fig. l.
Similar parts are referred to in the description and designated in the accompany ing drawing by like reference characters.
lReferring to the drawing by numerals, 1 designates a rigid tubular stem or shank having its outer end portion Q bent in a gradual curve to form an angle of about 45 degrees with the remaining portion thus adapting the stem to the curvature of the internal organs of the animal. A conical cup 3 is secured about the outer end of the tube l by the outwardly bowed guard wires 4t; which project longitudinally from the top edge of the cup and connect to the internally threaded ring 5 which screws on the threaded portion G of the tube. The tube is encircled by the guard wires 4 and projects into the cup 3 being spaced from its side walls and terminating slightly above the bottom thereof.
The inner end of the tube l is threaded for the purpose of attaching suitable means for drawing the semen therethrough and depositing it in the bottle 7. The means here shown consist of the flexible tubing 8 and the bulb 9.
The operation of my device is as follows: After for an example, a mare has been served by a stallion, the cup 3 on the curved stem 1 is inserted in the vagina of the animal and the semen withdrawn and collected in the bottle 7. Capsules are then filled with this fluid and used to impregnate other animals. The guard wires 4L constitute a very important part of my invention in thatthey prevent the folds of the internal organs of the animal being drawn into and clogging the end of the tube.
From the foregoing description in connection with the accompanying drawing it will be seen that I have provided an instrument of simple structure which is admirably adapted to the purpose intended.
It will of course be understood that minor changes in the manner of securing the cup to the stem and in the general shape of the instrument may be made without departing from the scope of the invention as defined by the claim.
Vhat I claim is A semen extractor comprising a tubular stem, a ring secured upon said stem near one end thereof, outwardly bowed guard wires secured to said ring, a conical cup secured at its opened end to said `guard wires, the end of said tube extending within the said cup and spaced from the end and inner wall of said cup.
In testimony whereof I hereunto al'lix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
MERTON WV. JOHNSON.
