SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 315,292, dated April 7, 1885.

To all whom it may concern.- Be it known that I, HENRY M. HOWELL, of the city, county, and State ofNew York, have invented a new and Improved Syringe, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. V
My invention relates to a new syringe,designed more especially for introducing plastic medical substances, such as salves, ointments, &c., into the human rectum.
The invention consists of a shell that may be filled with the plastic substance, and insertcd into the syringe-tube, and the plunger of the syringe forced into the shell for expeling the substance, thus avoiding the inconvenience of filling the syringe-tube, as with common syringes.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a sectional elevation of a syringe having my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional elevation of the same, showing the shell madein two parts; and Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the shell made continuous.
The syringe-tube A is of the ordinary cylindrical form, with the point a sufficiently long to pass well into the rectum. The propellingpiston B has a screw-threaded stem, 0, that passes through the cap D, which is screw tapped at b to receive it.
In the inside of the syringe-tube A is placed the shell E, which may be made in one piece as a continuous tube, as shown in Fig. 3; or it may be made in two duplicate semi-cylin drical parts, 6 e, as shown in Fig. 2. The shell is by preference reduced in size at its inner end, as shown at e, to partially enter the point a of the syringe A, and at its outer end it is formed with the flange f,to facilitate the withdrawal of the shell from the syringe-tube.
It.is designed to fill the shell E by mechanused interchangeably at will without the'inconvenience of filling them or the syringe. tube, the only thing necessary to be done be ing to insert the shell into the tube of the syringe, and to apply and operate the plunger or piston in the ordinary way. The piston 13 will of course be made somewhat smaller than t the interior of the tube A, so that it will properl y enter the shell E. After the contents of the shell are expelled the shell may be discarded.
NVhen the shell E is made in two parts. it is intended to be filled by the patient or his attendant, in which case the two halves of the shell are withdrawn from the syringe-tube, and both filled with the plastic medical substance. They are then placed together, the

Having thus described my invention,l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a syringe, the shell having the contracted inner end, and the flange at its outer end, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. 7
2. The combination, with the tube A, piston B, and stem 0 of a syringe, of the shell E, placed in the tube A, and adaptedto receive the piston and stem, substantially as scribed.
