This invention relates to an applicator for depositing medicaments which are effective to destroy the tissues or animal growth which causes the development of horns on cattle and is a precautionary measure to avoid the necessity of dehorning cattle after such growths have developed. This invention is regarded as an improvement on applicants invention for the same purpose which forms the subject matter of an application, Serial No. 689,933, filed August 12, 1946.
An object of this invention is to provide a holder or container for the medicament, providing means also for the application of the medicament to the embryo horns of young cattle; the said dcvice having also means for massaging the bases of the growth to insure the entry of said medicament into the exposed portions of said growth; and it is furthermore an object of the invention to provide means by which said medicament may be transferred from a reservoir through a duct to a cup which encompasses or embraces the growth to which reference has been made, and the invention also has for its purpose the regulation of the amount of the medicament that can be dispensed during one application or treatment,
The invention furthermore has for an object the provision of a reservoir or cylindrical member in which a piston reciprocates for discharging the medicament, and the device comprises comparatively few and inexpensive parts which have been found efficient and satisfactory in use.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the details of construction, and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed,
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this application, wherein like characters denote corresponding parts in the several views and in which- Figure 1 illustrates a view in side elevation of an a plicator embodying the invention;
Figure 2 illustrates a longitudinal sectional view thereof;
Figure 3 illustrates an end view of the applicator on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2; and
Figure 4 illustrates a sectional view of the applicator on the 1ine 4-4 of Fig. 2.
In these drawings 5 denotes a cylindrical reservoir Which may be formed of glass, composition, or the like, and its external surface at the ends has threads 6, the threads at one end being engaged by the threads of a flange I, which flange is formed as a part of the apertured head 8, the
wall of the aperture of which has threads 9 engaged by the threads I!) of a rod II, which rod is threaded through the head and is provided with a piston l2 which works in the cylinder, and the piston is effective to force medicament from the cylinder, and the rod is also provided with a knob or handle I la by which it is manipulated.
A packing ring or gland I3 is secured to the piston at its edge and is held in place thereon by fastenings I4, such as rivets or the like, so that the piston will be effective in forcing the medicament from the cylinder.
A gauge or an abutment I5 is threaded on the p ston and it is adjusted thereon in spaced relation to the head 9, the adjustment being had after each movement of the piston for applying the medicament, as by this means through having the gauge l5 at a certain distance from the head and moving the piston until the gauge encounters the head, the displacement occasioned by the movement of the piston may be visualized.
The cylinder is further rovided with a head It having a threaded flange I! which is anchored on the cylinder, and the said head has a neck [8 with an outwardly cup-shaped recess l9 which fits over the horn growth to which reference has been made, and the edge of the cup-like structure is provided with serrations 29 which perform a scraping or massaging operation as it is turned in contact with the horn growth. It is seen that a duct 2| is formed in the head I6 and neck l8 communicating with the interior of the cylinder so that the medicament displaced by the piston exudes through the duct into the cup-shaped recess I9 where it is forced in contact with the horn rowth.
It is desirable to regulate the amount of medicament delivered during one application, for if the delivery is excessive, the medicament accumulates on the head of the animal around the horn growth and is apt to be distributed on other animals as the patient (as it were) is circulating among the herd.
The piston and rod may, of course, be connected by a ball and socket joint of conventional type which would permit the rod to rotate but permit the piston to move in the cylinder longitudinally thereof without rotating, but as such mechanical utility is well known, it is believed unnecessary for an understanding of the invention to illustrate the same, and since the advantages of the invention and the manner of its use have been stated in connection with a description of the several parts of the deyice, a resume of the operation is believed unnecessary for an understanding of the invention by one skilled in the art.
We claim:
1. A medicament applicator comprising a reservoir for holding the medicament, a piston operative to displace and discharge the medicament from the reservoir, an ap'ertured closure for one end of the reservoir, the wall of the apertur of which is threaded, a threaded rod. connected to the piston and operating in the threads of the closure, a gauge on the rod for indicating the degree of movement of the rod and the movement of the piston, a head and neck on they oppositeend of the reservoir having a duct, and a recess in the outer end of the said formation adapted, to.
approximately fit the horn growth to betreat'ed, the edge of said formation being. serrated to form massaging teeth.
2. A medicament applicator comprising a reservoir for holding the medicament, a piston slidably arranged in the said reservoir, a closure for one end of the reservoir having a threaded open.- ing therein, a rod threaded in the said opening and connected to the piston, an abutment threaded on the rod and adapted to be adjusted with relation to the closure to a degree representing the desired displacement of the piston for discharging a proper application for a treatment, an apertured head on the reservoir against which the piston operates, the said head having a cupshaned recess to which the medicament is delivered, the edge of the cup being serrated to form massaging teeth which abrade the horn growth at its base as the medicament is applied to said horn growth.
