1 Claim. (Cl. 132-113) The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in fountain combs for applying oil or other solution to the hair.
An important object of the invention is to provide the comb with an air pump to pressurize the liquid and insure equal feeding thereof to all of the teeth of the comb for more effective distribution of the liquid to the hair.
Another object is to construct the comb with a handle on which a lever for operating the air pump is conveniently mounted to maintain desired air pressure in the reservoir of the comb while the comb is being continuously used.
A further object is to provide a fountain comb of simple and practical construction, which is efiicient and reliable in operation, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purpose for which the same is intended.
These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is an elevational view of the back of the comb;
Figure 2 is a side elevational View;
Figure 3 is a front elevational view;
Figure 4 is an enlarged fragmentary longitudinal sectional view taken on a line 44 of Figure 1;
Figures 5 and 6 are transverse sectional views taken respectively on the lines 55 and 66 of Figure l;
Figurue 7 is a sectional view taken on a line 7-7 of Figure 4; and i Figure 8 is an enlarged sectional view taken on a line 88 of Figure 7.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration 1 have disclosed a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates a fountain comb which includes a hollow back 6 and hollow teeth 7. The hollow back forms a reservoir 8 adapted to hold a quantity of oil or other solution for use in treating the hair and is placed in the reservoir by means of a filler plug 9. One side of the back 6 is provided with a window 10 to determine the level of the liquid therein.
The teeth 7 are provided with upper and lower orifices 11 and 12 to discharge the liquid near the ends and near the roots of the hair and the lower orifice 12 is positioned ice to drain the hollow teeth and prevent liquid from remaining therein after using the comb. Passages 13 lead from the reservoir 8 to the teeth and are controlled by an elongated rotary valve 14 which extends longitudinally of the comb and which intersects each passage and is formed with transverse passages 15 registering with the feed passage 13 to supply liquid to the teeth or to cut ofli flow of liquid thereto. A handle 16 is provided at the front end of the valve to turn the same on and 0E.
The rear end of the comb is provided with a rearwardly projecting handle 17 which is formed with a pair of upstanding spaced apart apertured ears 18 on which a lever 19 is pivoted. The front end of the lever is formed with a downwardly projecting lip 20 positioned at right angles behind and in operative engagement with a spring projected plunger 21 of an air pump 22 of a conventional type which is mounted in the back of the comb to supply compressed air to the reservoir.
When holding the handle 17 of the comb in the hand of a person, the thumb may be used to operate pump lever 19 and compress the air in the reservoir behind the liquid therein and upon opening valve 14 the liquid will be forced to the several teeth under equal pressure throughout the length of the comb and applied to the hair by the orirfices 11 and 12. Accordingly the liquid will be evenly distributed to the hair whether the comb is held in either a horizontal position or in an inclined position.
The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the appended claim.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
A fountain comb having a reservoir at the back of the comb and hollow teeth leading therefrom, said teeth having discharge orifices therein, a cut-off valve intersecting the teeth, said reservoir being adapted to contain liquid, said comb including a handle, an air pump mounted in the back of the comb and including an outwardly projecting plunger, and a lever pivoted on the handle in operative engagement with the plunger to compress air in the reservoir.
