Application March 14, 1940, Serial No. 323,978
2 Claims.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in toothbrushes and more particularly to toothbrushes of the dentifrice containing and dispensing type.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide a toothbrush wherein the handle thereof serves as a reservoir for tooth paste or liquid and from which the dentifrice can be dispensed to the bristles of the brush with a minimum amount of effort executed on the part of the user.
These and various other important objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent to the reader of the following specification.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 represents a bottom plan view of the brush.
Figure 2 is a side elevational view.
Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view through the brush.
Figure 4 is a cross section on the line 44 of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a cross section on the line 55 of Figure 1.
Figure 6 is a side elevational view of the plunger barrel and guide unit.
Figure 7 is an enlarged fragmentary detailed sectional view through the plunger barrel and guide unit.
Figure 8 is an enlarged fragmentary detailed rods extending therefrom in spaced relation to each other and these rods connect to the ring or keeper 1! which seats in a recess E2 of a plug l3 which is threadedly disposed into the butt end of the handle 5.
Threadedly disposed into the ring H is the threaded end portion hi of the spring containing tube [5. The other end of this tube i5 is reduced as at 16 to define the guide extension H for the plunger rod 18. This plunger rod has the stop l9 located in the tube arid extends through the plug l3 beyond the butt end of the handle where it is equipped with the knurled button 20.
Located in the tube l5 and convoluting the plunger rod I8 is the compression spring 2|, this spring being interposed between the reduced portion l6 of the tube l5 in the stop collar l9. Obviously, the purpose for the spring 2| is to urge the plunger rod [8 to the position shown in Figure 3, thus maintaining the plunger 22 at the forward end of the rod I8 removed from the plunger barrel 9, so that dentifrice can always fill the barrel 9.
A check valve 23 is provided in the forward end of the barrel 9 preventing return of the dentifrice to the barrel 9, and this end of the barrel is externally threaded for disposition into the socket 24 at the rear end of the dispensing tube 25, which is partly embedded in the brush back 26 from which the bristles 21 project. As shown in Figure 5, this tube is formed with discharge openings 28.
Obviously, to dispense dentifrice to the bristles 21, all that is required is to force inwardly the plunger rod l8 which will force the dentifrice from the barrel 9 by way of the check valve 23 and into the tube 25 from which it will discharge by way of the opening 28 to the bristles 21.
While the foregoing specification sets forth the invention in specific terms, it is to be understood that numerous changes in the shape, size and materials may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed hereinafter.
Having described the claimed as new is:
1. A combination handle and ejector for attachment to a toothbrush head to inject dentifrice thereinto comprising a tubular member invention, what is having a rear end closure plug detachably secured therein, and a tapered front end, a plunger barrel of relatively smaller diameter than said member threaded into said front end of the member and extending therefrom, said barrel opening at its rear end into said member, an annular keeper socketed in the inner face of said plug, a tubular spring housing extending forwardly from said keeper into the member,-a plunger extending through said plug, keeper and housing for manipulation forwardly of said memher into said barrel, a spring in the housing tensioning the plunger against forward movement, and a plurality of plunger guide rods extending between the rear end of said barrel and said keeper in surrounding relation to the plunger and housing.
2. A combination handle and ejector for attachment to a toothbrush head to inject dentifrice thereinto comprising a" tubular member having a rear end closure plug detachably secured therein, and a tapered front end, a plunger barrel of relatively smaller diameter than said member threaded into said front end of the member and extending therefrom, said barrel opening at its rear end into said member, an annular keeper socketed in the inner face of said plug, a tubular spring housing extending forwardly from said keeper into the member, a plunger extending through said plug, keeper and housing for manipulation forwardly of said member into said barrel, a spring in the housing tensioning the plunger against forward movement, a plurality of plunger guide rods extending between the rear end of said barrel and said keeper in surrounding relation to the plunger and housing, and a stop collar on said plunger coacting with said plunger to establish a normal position of the plunger in which the front end of the plunger is spaced inwardly from the rear end of said barrel.
GEORGE L. HOUSLEY.
