Description

Dec. 28, 1937. c. F.l ROBER'TSQN 2,103,493
Dl'SPENSING DEV-ICE l Fi'ied May 14, 1934 Patented Dec. 28, 1937 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE DISPENSING DEVICE Application May 14, 1934, Serial No. 725,602 f In Great Britain May 17, 1933 2;. Claims.
This invention relates to dispensing devices for brushes and the like, and it has for its object to provide an improved form and construction of device which is more convenient and effectual than those which are at present in use.
Devices of various kinds are already. known in which the reservoir consists of a tubular mem-. ber which is fitted with a screw-operated or other form oi plunger, the reservoir being initially lled with liquid cream or other material which latter is fed to the bristles of brushes as required by progressive movement of the plunger long the reservoir. Moreover, a brush for sweeping has been devised in which a plunger pump associated with a reservoir for liquid serves to spray said liquid in advance of the bristles for the purpose of allaying the dust.
In 'accordance with one feature-of the invention, there is provided a reservoir brush comprising a handle, bristles or likelling and a reservoir for liquid, said liquid being fed from the reservoir to a plunger pump comprising a cylinder and an associated piston or plunger and thence into the midst of the bristles. If desired, the reservoir may be arranged so as to be readily removable from that portion carrying the bristles or equivalent, while the discharge aperture of the pump may be arranged to deliver the liquid through a slot formed in that part of the brush carrying the bristles, a discharge nozzle being carried by the plunger or equivalent reciprocatory part of the pump. The invention further provides a reservoir brush for toilet use comprising a hollow back serving as a handle, a cover provided with` bristles or equivalent iilling, a reservoir disposed within said back and a plunger pump having a cylinder arranged to receive liquid from the reservoir and to deliver it into the midst of the filling. Conveniently, the reservoir is formed with a longitudinally extending groove within which the pump is disposed for the purpose of providing a compact unit, while the pump maybe operated by means of an external push button arranged to be rendered inoperative when the pump is not required to be used, This push button may be slidably mounted relative to a piston rod on the pump, and may be arranged to operate said piston rod through the medium of a radially extending member which is thus enabled either to slide into a longitudinal slot in the piston rod or to engage the end of said rod for operating the latter. The filling cap of the reservoir is preferably provided with a one-Way valve for allowing the ingress of air to said reservoir, and in an alternative construction the pump may be provided with lever mechanism whereby it is operable from a handle extending laterally from the brush portion as in a ladys hair brush.
The invention is illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure l is a longitudinal sectional elevation through a hair brush primarily intended for gentlemens use;
Figure 2 is a transverse section taken on the line 2.-2 of Figure l;
Figure 3 shows, on an enlarged scale, a longitudinal section through one form of pump;
Figure 4 shows also, on an enlarged scale, a section through the ller cap, and
Figure 5 is a diagrammatic plan View showing one method by which the invention may be adapted for use in connection with ladies hair brushes.
Referring to Figure 1, it will be seen that the.,
device comprises a back IU which is substantially box-like in form, and is provided with a cover II Carrying the bristles indicated at I2. The cover ii, which may conveniently be of moulded material, such as that known under the registered trade-mark Bakelite, is provided with a -rebated edge I3 and is held in place by means of a catch I at one end and a screw I5, which, extending through the side wall I6 of the back I0, engages an angle bracket Il secured to the cover II. 'Ihe catch I 4 and bracket Il may if desired be moulded into or as part of the cov` er II.
Within the back I0 is disposed a reservoir I8 conveniently formed from sheet metal and provided with a iilling plug indicated at I9, said reservoir i8 bein-g formed with a longitudinal groove 2t for the accommodation of a plunger pump, which is indicated generally at 2| and is shown in detail in Figure 3. For receiving the suction pipe 22 of the pump, the reservoir is provided with a tubular portion 23 containing a stopper 24 so as to render the pump readily removable.
Referring to Figure 3, it will be seen that the pump comprises a barrel or cylinder 25 provided with a suction non-return valve 26, the lower end of the suction pipe 22 being notched as informed with a longitudinal slot 34. The purpose of this is to allow a push button 35 to assume a contracted position when the pump 2l is out of use. To this end a stem 36 is bored at 3l to slip over the extension 33 and is provided with a diametral pin 38 which, for operating the piston, presses upon the end of the extension 33. When the pump isrnot required, the button 35 is rotated so that the pin 38 engages the slot 3e. A wire ring 36 which fits tightly about the sleeve near its inner end, as shown in Figure 3, prevents the stem from passing outwardly beyond the position shown in Figure l by engaging the inner face of the end wall of the back.
It will be seen from Figure l that the discharge nozzle extends through a slot 39 formed in the cover Il, and as the button 35 is successively depressed for operating the pump, the contents of the reservoir I8 are discharged to the bristles In order to allow the ingress oi air to the reservoir 8 as the liquid is used, a non-return valve 40 is provided in the iiller cap as shown in Figure 4, while the head of said cap is slotted as indicated at H so as to be conveniently opened by the edge of a coin.
A Inodiiied adaptation of the invention is illustrated in Figure 5, in which the plunger purnp 2| is incorporated in a hair brush for ladies use,
and in which the extension 33 of the piston rod is adapted to be depressed against the influence of the spring 3!! by a bell crank lever 42 which is pivoted at 43 and is provided with a lateral press button or equivalent lill, conveniently forming part of the handle @5 sol as to be readily accessible during use. The reservoir (not shown) may be disposed at the back of the bristles as previously described, or may be incorporated within the handle part d5 in the form of a cartridge.
Although only two forms oi the invention have been illustrated, it will be readily apparent that it may be applied to reservoir brushes generally, and the construction of the various parts together with the nieans used for operating the pump may be modified in accordance with the scope of the claims.
The invention may be applied to all forms of brushes in which a supply of liquid is required, such for instance as scrubbing brushes to be used with liquid soap and polishing brushes generally.
What I claim is:-
1. In a device of the character described, a cylinder having an inlet at one end, a piston rod slidable through the other end of said cylinder, a piston at the other end. of the pistonv rod, said piston rod having a longitudinally extending slot leading from its outer end, a push button formed with a longitudinally extending pocket slidably and rotatably receiving the outer end portion of said piston rod, and a pin extending diametrically of said push button through the pocket thereof and disposed to enter the slot when the push button is in one position to permit sliding movement of the push button independent of the piston rod, the pin being adapted to be disposed transversely of the slot when the push button is turned to an adjusted position and bear against the outer end of the piston rod in crossed relation to the slot to cause the piston rod to be shifted longitudinally into the cylinder and discharge contents of the cylinder when pressure is applied toV the push button.
2. In a device of the character described, a reservoir having a wall formedfwith a longitudinally extending external channel, said reservoir having a neck extending into one end portion of the channel and extending longitudinally therein, a pump cylinder extending longitudinally in the channel with one end formed with an inlet communicating with the outlet neck of the reservoir, a piston in said cylinder having a tubular piston rod extending longitudinally in the channel, a discharge nozzle carried by the outer end of the piston rod and extending from the channel laterally thereof, a spring yieldably resisting movement of the piston rod inwardly of the cylinder, and a plunger for forcing the piston rod inwardly of the cylinder extending from said nozzle and having an actuating element.
