BUTTON FASTENER.
APPLICATION FILED AUG.IO. I918.

WALTER BROOKS CARRUTHERS, OF TORONTO, OI TTARIO, CANADA.
BUTTON -FASTENER.
Application filed August 10, 1918.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatrI, WALTER BROOKS GAR- RUTHnRs, of the city of Toronto, in the county of York, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Button-Fasteners, of which the following is the specification.
My invention relates to improvements in button fasteners and the object of the invention is to devise positive means for seeuring heavy buttons to heavy cloth so that there will be no danger of their loosening and being lost and will remain securely attached to the garment as long as such garment lasts and it consists essentially of the following arrangement and construction of parts as hereinafter more particularly explained.
Figure 1, is a general perspective view of a button secured by my device to a portion of cloth and showing the main portion of my device in section.
Fig. 2, is a perspective detail of the securing means separated from the button.
In the drawings like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the various figures.
1 indicates a portion of cloth. 2 indicates a button provided With a loop or eye 2". 3 indicates a disk provided in proximity to its edge at one side thereof with an eye 3 and with a wire 4 at a diametrically opposite point 4:", the secured end of such wire being welded or otherwise suitably secured to the disk 3.
hen securing the button in place the disk 3 is placed against the inner face of the cloth, the button being placed against Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 18, 1919.
Serial No. 249,307.
the opposite face and the wire 4 threaded through the cloth, through the loop or eye 2* and again through the cloth and through the eye 3 the end of the wire projecting through the eye 3* being wound around the eye to attach it in place.
It will thus be seen that I have provided by this construction a bearing for the button against the inner face of the cloth so that any pull on the button will not tend to tear the cloth away and, therefore, provide positive securing means which cannot break away and which will last as long as the garment. itself lasts.
It will be understood that the disk 3 may be of any ornamental design such as a patriotic button or it may be used as an identification disk with the identification marks on the outer face thereof or it may be used for any advertising purpose desired.
VVha-t I claim as my invention is.
The combination with a button having a loop or eye adapted to bear against one face of a cloth portion, a plate adapted to bear against the opposite face of thecloth portion, a separate flexible wire attached at one end to the plate and adapted to be threaded through the cloth and button eye and again through the cloth, and an eye projecting from the inner face of the plate and through which the wire is adapted to pass and be wound when it is drawn home with the plate a rld button close pressed to the cloth at each 51 e.
WALTER BROOKS CARRUTHERS.
