SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 269,756, dated December 26, 1882.

Application filed October 18, 1882. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, JULIUS WEIS, of Chicago, in thecounty of Cool; and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Button, of which the followiugis a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved button which can be passed through a button-hole very easily and without soiling or injuring the said button-hole.

The invention consists in a button having a wire ring formed on its shank or post, which ring is provided with two overlapping tongues, one of which has the end turned upward, the other having itturned downward and actingor pressing upon the lower tongue. The button can be secured to a garment by passing one tongue into the button-hole and then turning the button.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a plan view of the under side of my improved button. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the under side, showing it passed half-way through a button-bole.

The post or shank projecting from the under surface of the button B is formed of two wires, which are solderedor otherwise secured to the button, and are then bent in the shape of a ring,-O, proyided with two tongues, D, which overlap each other, of which tongues the lower one projects from and the upper one projects toward the lower surface of the button B.

In securing the button to any garment, the lower or outer tongue is inserted through the button-hole, and by turning the'button to the right the tongues are caused to pass through the button-hole of the garment, so that they will rest against the inner surface of the same, and will pret'ent the button from being withdrawn. It the button is to be detached, it is only necessary to turn the same to the left. The button cannot come off accidentally or loosen itself, as the tongues are made to press against each other, so that some power is required to force the edge of-the button-bole between the overlapping lips formed by the shank and ring 0. The shank and the ring are to be made of any suitable kind of wire,

and can be made large or small, according to the size of the button. 1

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination, with a button, B, and its post, of a wire ring, 0, attached to or made integral with the 'post, and provided with curved overlapping tongues D, one of which is curved upward and the other downward at the ends, the downward bentor curved tongue pressing or acting upon the upward-curved tongue, substantially asherein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
