RETAINING-PIN FOR NECK-WEAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 424,137, dated March 25, 1890.
Application filed December 14, 1889. Serial No. 333,726. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUSTAVE SELowsKY, of of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Scarf-Band-Retaining Pins, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in scarf-band-retaining pins, the object being to provide a pin which can be readily attached without sewing, and which, when attached, will be firmly and securelyheld in place.
The invention consists in the novel construction of the head of the pin, all as hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is made to the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a rear View of a scarf, partly broken away and showing my improvement attached to the lining thereof. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the improvement on an enlarged scale. illustrating the manner of applying the pin; and Figs. 6 and 7 are perspective views of modifications.
Referring to Figs. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 of the drawings, A represents a scarf, a the lining thereof, and B my improved pin. The pin B is preferably formed of a piece of wire, hav ing one end of its body portion 1) bent to form an essentially S-shaped head 0. The head 0 is formed by bending the upper end of the body portion 1) outward and downward, approximately parallel with the body portion, forming the loop d, and then upward, forming the loop (1 after which it is bent over the top of the body portion and down approximately parallel with the body, and opposite the loop at, forming with loop (1 an inverted-U-shaped slot e, open at one end and closed at the other, and the end then bent outward and upward, forming an open loop f.
In Fig. 6 the bends, instead of being curved, are angular; but I prefer to make them curved, as it facilitates the securing of the pin to the material.
To apply the pin it is first passed through the material a forming the lining of the Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are viewsscarf, near the edge thereof. Then the edge of the material is inserted between the open loop f and the body of the pin, as shown in Fig. 3. The pin is then turned around to the position shown in Fig. 4, the edge of the material passing into the slot 6, after which the edge of the material is passed in the open loop f, as shown in Fig. 5, when the pin will be firmly and securely attached to the material. It will thus be seen that by my improvement the pin can be readily and quickly applied and without sewing, and that when applied it interlocks with the material and has a bearing on both sides of the body of the pin, so that the pin is securely fastened in place.
While I have shown the improvement applied to pins for retaining scarf-bands, yet it will be readily seen that the improvement is applicable to pins for other purposes, and it may also be applied to hooks, as shown in Fig. 7.
Although I prefer to make the pin of wire, as shown, yet it may be stamped from sheet metal, if desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A pin having a head provided with an inverted-U-shaped slot, open at one end and closed at the other, and with an open loop at the open end of the said slot, substantially as described.
2. A pin formed of a piece of wire having its upper end bent down approximately parallel with the body of the pin to form the loop 01, then upwardly to form the loop (F, then over the top of the body of the pin and down approximately parallel with the said body, forming with the loop 01 the inverted- U-shaped slot 6, and then upwardly to form the open loop f, substantially as herein shown and described.
