BUTTON FASTENER.
No. 320,451. I Patented June 16, 1885.
WITNESSES IVENTORJ Mzmfia/W /L g I ATTORNEYS N. PEIERS. Pholc-Uthognphar. Wnhingiun, D. C.
UNITED STATES WILLIE O. WALTER, OF RICHMOND, VIRGINIA, ASSIGNOR OE TVVO-THIEDS PATENT OFFICE.
TO GEORGE B. MGADAMS, OF SAME PLACE.
BUTTON-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 320,451, dated June 16, 1885.
Application filed March 28, 1885.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIE G. WALTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Richmond, in the county of Henrico and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Button-Fasteners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawin gs, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a sectional view of my invention, showing a ring at opposite sides of the fabric. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing but one ring. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the fastener removed from the button, and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the same. Fig. 5 is a plan view of a piece of fabric with my improvements applied to a button, and Fig. 6 is a similar view of the opposite side of the fabric. Fig. 7 is a view of a modification of the fastener.
This invention. has relation to means for fastening buttons to clothing or other articles; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of devices, all as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the body of a button having the opening B. This body may be of any ordinary form 5 and 0 indicates a ring'guard arranged on the upper side of the button and adjacent thereto. This guard serves to prevent the button-hole from being frayed by the arms of the fastener.
D is the fastener, which consists of a flat- (No model.)
tened body, E, formed with arms F, extending therefrom through the openings B of the button. This is preferably cutout of sheet metal. The arms F are designed to be forced through the cloth to which the button is to be fastened, and bent outward or clinched over a ring-bearing, G, which is located on the opposite side of the cloth from the button, and serves to extend the bear-in g in a form which will not tear away from or injure the cloth. The body of the button may have a cap, H.
I am aware that it is not new to provide a metallic button having prongs out within the outer margin of its body for securing the same, and that buttons have been attached to fabrics by a tube of metal having prongs to engage both the button and fabric, and therefore do not claim such devices, broadly.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. The combination, with a button, of the fastener D, having the arms F, for securing the same to a fabric, and the ring arranged on the under side of the button and above the fabric, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with a button, of the fastener D, having the arms F, and the rings arranged, respectively, on the under side of the button and the opposite side of the fabric to which the button is attached, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
