Description

A. M. l. BAUS. GARMENT FASTENEB.l APPLICATION msu'oeasi 191e.
1 ,237,279 Patented Aug. 21, 1917.
Jn ven Zar-j ARTHUR IVI. J. BAUS, OF BROOKLINE, MASSACHUSETTS.
eARMENT-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent. `Patented A110, 21, Y191'?.
Application ined December 9, 191e. serial No. 135,941.
To all Iwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR MQJLBAUS, a. subject of King Albert of Belgium, residing at Brookline, countyv of 'Norfo'llg Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improve ments in Garment-Fasteners, of which the following is a Specification.
This invention relates to button fasteners and particularly to a device for fastend ing a button to a garment without the n d trative embodiments which have been found usual sewing.
The particular type of button" andthe manner of attachment vary with the nature of the garment upon which the button is intended to be used. l
The object of my invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive and easily inanipulat-l v angles to `each other` showing a form ofv fastener particularly adapted for .usewith able fastener whereby the button may be detachably securedinposition upon any garment without the usual sewing.
In one "adaptation of my invention, where the button is intended to be used on cloth and fur, and' particularly on fur, the gar ment is provided with an openingv adaptedv to receive the engageable portion of the button, andthe fastener consists of a plate having 'an opening therein through which the engageable portion of the button isl inserted,v and plate and button are detachably secured to the garment by a" pin guided in alined guides von the plate and run transversely through the said engageable portion at plate. i l
In another adaptation, where the button is .intended to be used onl-yon cloth no- 'gageable portion of the button and penetrates the projected portion of the gar'- ment on either side of the opening in the plate. v
In both forms, the pin guides are disposed transversely of the plate on each side of the opening therein and in alinement with each other and dispose the pin in substantially' the plane. of the plate. The plates vthemselves in both embodiments have guards for the point of the pin alined with the .pin guides and these guards are preferably formed by deflecting the marginal area of said opening in thetheV plate fromthe general .plane4 ofthe .plate to forni a guard and stopv `against which the point of the pin abuts. This guard fiexes the pin slightly and puts it `under a tension sufficient to `prevent the pin accidentally becoming withdrawn from. the
plate.
.The construction and manner of using my device is fully disclosed in the specification which follows. In the drawing accompany-A ing that specification `I have shown illus-y d satisfactory in use and well adapted to the requirements of -Inanufaeture the specication and drawing like referF ence characters are correspondingly applied andv in these drawings:
Figures l and 2 are sectionsfat right a fur garment and illustrating the use of such fastener.` i i Fig.` 3 is a section sim-ilarto Fig.'v l 4and illustrating the use of said` fastener with a special type ofbutton used by furriers.
Throughout- Fig. lisla view of the attaching plate lshown in Figs. l, 2 and 3 removed.` i
Fig. 5 is a section similar to Fig.v 2 of a vmodification especially adapted forfu'sewith cloth, and i 1 Fig. Gris a .view ofthe .attaching plate shown in Fig. 5, removed.
In the form of myl invention shown in Figs. -1 t'o l 4t-inclusive, the fastener is es-H peciallyadap'ted foruse with fur garments although it may `be used with cloth. I have indicated at l in said figures aplate adapted to befplaced against the inner face "of agarment or other fabric 2, and provided `with an opening 3, preferably` centrally .thereof, adapted to b e registered with an o enino' 21 in the material 2 land throuo'h P s i-i which openings the engageableA portion 4 of the button 5 isl adapted to be inserted, and
ythere held by a pin 8 which is run under alined einbossments 6, preferably three in number, formed in one face of the plate in such relation as to dispose the pin S'transversely of the opening 3 and in substantially the plane of the plate. rThis pin may be the common household pin and is preferably of a length slightly less than the great-A est transverse dimension of the plate, as shown .in the drawings.
I have illustrated in Fig. 3, a special type of button used by furriers, in which the enbe fastened without ruftling the cloth.
gageable portion of the button consists of a tape 4:1 which is knotted, as shown. rI`he knot 42 is disposed in the openings 21 and 3 and the free ends of the tape extend through said openings. rlhe pin is run through the knot of the tape, and plate andf'pin are as shown in Figs. l, 2 and 4.
In theforni of -niy invention shown in Figs. 5 and 6, the fasteneris especially adapted for use with cloth. In this forni no opening is inade in the cloth to receive the eye'or other engageable portion 4t of the button, but the cloth overlying the opening 3 of theplate 1 is projected through ysaid opening by the eye as indicated at 2%, and -1 1 the pin is run through the projected cloth.
2a on each side of the eye and over the loop of the eye itself. rIhe pin shown in connection with this foiin'has a portion S1A between with the pin guide angularly withrelation *to the generalplane of the plate. rIliis deflected portion 9 in addition to its guardingl function assists 1n preventing accidental disengagement of the pin by reason of thefact `that the pin is flexed slightly under contact A thereby.
What I therefore claini and desire to eure by Letters Patent is:
l. A fastener, comprising a plate having an openingtherein for the reception of the engageable portion of an article to be fastened-and having one edge deliected from the general plane of the plate and consti tuting avguard for a pin, and a pin adapted .to be passed transversely across said open ing through said engageable portion and to abut said guard and be put under tension ,2. A fastener comprising a plate having an openingtherein for the reception ofthe engageable portion of an article to be fastened anddiaving alined pin guiding portions disposed in such relation to said opening as to guide a pin transx'fersely across Asaid opening, and having that edge opposite `said ,piny guide l,deflected from ythe general plane ofthe plate and constituting a guard for the point of a pin, and a pointed pin adapted to beinserted in" said Vpin guide with itspointabutting said guard ywhereby the pin is put under tension by said guard. 3. A fastener comprising a plate having an opening therein for the receptionk of the .engageable portion of anarticle to be fasvtened and having a ,guard portion beyond with the guard .and is thereby put underA tension. I thus provide a button fastener in which the pin is disposed transverselyv across the f opening ofthe platexand is retained in alined guiding portions which dispose the.v pin in substantially the plane of the plate and with its point lprotected and thepinVVV itself flexed slightly byfa Eguard i portion alined with said guide.
v Various other modifications in the forni and .construction of iny device vinay obviously beresorted to withinthe'liinits of the `appended claims.` -a
inl presence of `said. opening, and a pointed pin adapted to be passed transversely across said opening through said engageable portion with its kpoint abutting said guard and put under tension thereby. y 4. A fastener', comprising a plate having an opening therein for the reception of the engageable` portionl of an article to be fastened and Ihaving near one edge thereof a guard vportion for `the point of a pin and having alined einbossinents constituting a Vpinguide, and a pointed pin guided under` and yretained by. said enibossine'ntsy and eX- tending transversely across said opening through said engageable portion with its point lodged in protected relation to said guard.
In testimony whereof I affix iny signature two witnesses.
