T @FFME WILLIAM Il?. ROWAN, OF LOUIS, MISSOURI, .ASSIGNOR TO ELDER MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF ST. LOUIS, 'MISSOURL A CORPORATION OF MISSOURI.
SHIRT-SLEEVE.
To all wiz-om t may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM P. RowAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Shirt-Sleeves, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof. n
This invention relates generally to shirts and, more particularly, to a certain new and useful improvement in shirt-sleeves.
With shirt-sleeves as now generally made or manufactured, so far as I am aware, the arm or wrist of the wearer is more or less exposed at the placket of the sleeve. In inclement or cold weather, and especially with work shirts golf shirts, and the like, such exposure is disagreeable and obnoxious. The want of a shirt readily put on and having means for covering and protecting the arm of the wearer at the placket of the sleeve has hence been greatly felt. The object of my present invention is to provide a shirt which may be readily and easily put on and in which the sleeves are formed with means adapted to cover and protect from exposure the arm or wrist of the wearer at the otherwise open plackets of the sleeves.
With this object in viewz my present invention resides in the provision of a shirt having a sleeve provided or formed with a flexible extension or flap on either the under or over-facing of the placket, the extension or flap being adapted and designed to project across the placketopening and thereby cover and protect from exposure the arm or wrist of the wearer at the placket of the sleeve, and in certain novel features of form, construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, all as will hereinafter be described and afterward pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a shirtsleeve embodying my invention in preferred form' Fig'. 2 is a front view of the sleeve with its culi open;
Fig. 3 is an inside elevation of the sleeve torn apart;
Fig. 4 is a similar view, illustrating, however, the flap or extension in placket-closing position;
Fig. 5 is a perspective view, looking down into the sleeve;
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 18, 1919.
Application 1ed December 4, 1916. Serial No. 135,018.
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a shirtsleeve embodying my invention in a slightly modified form; and
Fig. 7 is a front view of the sleeve shown in Fig. 6, with its cuff open.
Referring to the said drawings, in which like reference characters refer to like parts throughout the Several views, the sleeve proper may lbe of any usual or approved construction, the sleeve proper including a main portion 1, a cufl 2, and a placket for convenience in putting the shirt on, the placket having an under placket-piece or facing 3 and an upper placket-piece or facing 4:. i Formed preferably continuous with the placket under-facing 3 and projecting lengthwise laterally of the sleeve, is a flexible extension or flap 5. This flap 5 has a width preferably approximately equal to the length of the placket, extending from the inner edge of the cuff 2 to the crotch 6 of the placket, and is of such length relatively to the diameter of the sleeve that its free end 5a will project, when the placket and cuff are closed, as by means of the engagement of the button-hole 7 with one or the other of the buttons 8, well around within the sleeve, as shown particularly in Fig. 5. Thus the flap 5, extending across the placket-opening is adapted to form a cover-member for the otherwise open placket of the Sleeve and to protect from exposure the arm or wrist of the wearer at the sleeve-placket, the Hap 5, the shirt being upon a wearer, projecting around within and crosswise of the sleeve withV its outer face throughout closely up against the Ainner face of the sleeve.
In the modified form of my invention illustrated in Figs. 6 and 7, the placket cover-member or iap 5 is continuous with the upper placket-facing 4 instead of with the under placket-facing as in the preferred form of my invention illustrated in Figs. l to 5, inclusive, the iap or extension 5 extending exteriorly, instead of interiorly, as with flap 5, laterally of the sleeve and across the placket. In this form of my invention, also, I preferably provide the flap 5 and sleeveportion 1 with coperating fastening-members, as, for instance, the button-hole 9 and button 10, for detachably holding the flap 5 in placket closing-position when the shirt is upon a wearer.
My invention is simple, increases but little the cost of manufacture of the shirt, adds considerably, especially with Work-shirts and the like, to the` attractiveness and usefulness of the shirt, and, as I have from experience found, efficiently accomplishes the object mentioned.
I am aware that minor changes in the form, construction, arrangement, and combination of the several parts of my new shirtsleeve may be made and substituted for those herein shown and described Without departing'froni the nature and principle of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: i
l, As a new article of manufacture, a shirt-sleeve having a longitudinal placket and a cuff open continuous With the placket, coperating fastening-members on the cuit for detachably fastening the same adjustably in closed position, and a single flexible ap projecting from one edge only of the sleeve at its placket, said iiap being adapted to extend laterally of the sleeve and across the placket-opening and provide a closingmember for the Aplacket-opening When the cuff isin either of its adjusted closed positions.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a shirt-sleeve having a longitudinal placket and a cuff open continuous with the lacket, cooperating fastening-members on t e cuff for detachably fastening the same adjustably in closed position, and a single flexible iiap projecting from the under-facing only of the sleeve-placket, said flap being adapted to extend around Within the sleeve and across the placket-opening and provide a closingmember for the placket-opening When the cuff is in either of its adjusted closed positions.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification.
WILLIAM P. ROWAN.
