APPLICATION HLED APR. 23, 19]]- 1 84,542 Patented Nov. 12, 1918.
I W/veW/ior g 'ed M Ziegier,
UNITED STATS ATENT OFFICE.
ALFRED M. ZIEGLER, 0F BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
SUSPENDEBS.
To'aZZ whom-it may concern:
Beit knownthatl, ALFRED M. Zrnennn, a citizen of the United Statcs,-and a resident of Boston, in the'county-ofSufiolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Suspenders, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is aspecifi'cation, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates to suspenders and particularly to those of the so called duplex type, wherein the garment is supported by the shoulder strap by a double supporting loo E ly invention will best be understood by reference to the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings illustrating one embodiment of my invention wherein i Figure 1 is a plan view of a portion of a suspender embodying my invention:
Fig. 2 is the section on the line 22'- of. Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a section on the line of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, I show at 5 one of the shoulder straps of a pair of suspenders, from which is suspended the end 7 preferably of the form hereinafter to be more fully described, which end is attached to the garment. The strap 5 may be provided with the usual adjustment buckle 9 and in the loop thereof is a fitting 11 conveniently of sheet metal having an eye 13.
The eye 13 provides for the attachment of the connecting member by which the duplex end 7 is secured to the shoulder strap. This connecting member in the embodiment of the invention shown, as seen in Fig. 2, takes the form of an endless band 15 formed of a strip of suitable material, for example, selvaged webbing. The band 15 is suspended by its intermediate portion from fitting 11, conveniently as shown by being looped through aperture 13 so that it may slide therethrough. The terminal bights 17 depend at either side of the fitting 11 and are adapted to embrace the reaches 19 and 21 of the duplex end 7.
By the construction of the member 15 just described it is permitted to adjust itself in the member 11 so as to provide for even tension on the two portions 19 and 21 of the suspender end. Also when it is made as an endless band as described, it is permitted Specification of Letters Patent.

gradually to work around so as to distribute the wear of theffitting 11 and'of the two reaches 19 and 21 of the end throughout the whole length of the band.
' The suspender end 7 may be of any suitabletype, but preferably takes the form of an endless cord, providing upper and lower reaches 19 and 21 respectively, joined by terminal bights 23 and 25, which are adapted to form button receiving loops. For this purpose the two reaches 19 and21 ofthe cordmay be secured together at a suitable distance from the bightsto provide a loop of the desired length. Herein for example I have shown the bight25 as being formed into a loop by means of a metal clamp 27, embracing the adjacent reaches of the cord and holding them together. Suitable spurs 29 may be struck up from the member 27 to enter the cord and secure the member thereto.
One at least of the loop forming members, however, is of peculiar construction. I have (see Figs 1 and 3) herein shown the loop 23 as formed by a member 31 securing together the reaches 19 and 21 of the cord. Member 31 takes the form of a metal strip which may be tightly clamped about one reach of the cord as 21 and, if desired, may have prongs 33 entering the same fixedly to secure it in position. The other part of the member 33 embraces the cord 19 so as to permit the latter movement therein. For this purpose it is not provided with any prongs and it fits the cord suificiently loosely to allow the latter to have a certain sliding movement.
By the provision of a member such as the member 31 above described, the two reaches 19 and 21 of the endless cord are permitted to adjust themselves so as evenly to distribute the tension thereof. Thus, for example, the portion 21 of the cord may be drawn upwardly through the member 31, slightly lengthening the same and at the same time, because of the resultant shortening of the loop 23, shortening the upper reach 19 of the duplex member. It is therefore certain that each portion of the end 7 will bear its proper share of the strain and this result is further insured by the cooperating action of the automatically adjustable connecting member 15, preferably as described in the form of an endless band looped through the fitting 11.
Having thus described in detail an illustrative embodiment of my invention by way of an example, the features thereof which I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent are:
1. Suspenders comprising a shoulder piece having an apertured fitting, a flexible connecting member having depending ends connected by an intermediate portion looped through said fitting and slidable therein, and a duplex end, the ends of said member being connected to the respective parts of said end.
2. A duplex'suspender end comprising a double cord, means for securing together the reaches thereof adjacent the terminal bights to provide button. receiving loops and ineluding a member clampingly embracing one reach of the cord and loosely embracing the other. V
Suspenders comprising a shoulder piece, a duplex end and means for connecting them including an endless flexible band having its intermediate portion secured to said shoulder piece and having terminal bights embracing the parts of said end.
at. Suspenders comprising a shoulder piece having an apertured fitting, an end having button-receiving portions connected by up per and lower cords and means for connecting the fitting and end comprising a fiat band doubled on itself, the doubled portions providii'ig terminal bights embracing said cords respectively, said band being received where doubled by the aperture of the fitting.
5. Suspenders comprising a shoulder piece having an apertured fitting, an end having button-receiving portions connected by upper and lower cords and means fpr connecting the fitting and end comprising a flat band folded to provide superposed thicknesses connected by lower bights and an intermediate upper bight said lower bights embracing said cords and said upper bight being slidably received'in the aperture of said fitting.
6. Suspenders comprising a shoulder piece having a fitting provided with a transverse slot, an endless fiat band having its intermediate portion slidably received in said slot to provide at either side thereof depending bights adjustable by the sliding movement of the intermediate ortion and an end having button receiving oops connected by upper and lower cords, which cords pass respectively through said bights.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification.
ALFRED M. ZIEGLER.
