Specification of Letters l-Patent.
Patentedflct. 29, 918.
Application filed April 21, 1916. Serial No. 92,788. nnniearnn- TO PBUBLIG.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. Union, a citizen of the United States of America, and an employee of the Department of Agriculture of the said United States, residing at Kalispell, Mont., whose post-ofiice' address is 119 Fourth Ave., E., Kalispell, Montana,
ave invented a new ment in Pack-Frames.
This application is made under the act of March 3,1883, chapter 143 (22 Stat, 625), and the invention herein described and claimed may be used by the Government of the United States or any of its officers or employees in the prosecution of work for the Government, or by any person in the United States, without payment of any royalty thereon.
The object of my invention is to provide a convenient and inexpensive device for the purpose of carrying a load fastened to the back of a person.
The nature and scope of my invention will be readily understood by the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming a part here- 0 wherein:
Figure 1 is a front view of the frame, with the shoulder straps removed, showing the beveled edges of the frame;
Fig. 2 is a rear view of the frame showing the straps and cross pieces; and
ig. 3 is a side view showing the shoulder straps in position.
eferring to the drawings, two vertical strips made of any terial, preferably of tough wood, having beveled inner edges, as shown at a, so that the frame may fit the back easily. At the top and at right angles with the strips, A, is attached, underneath said strips, a cross strip, B, which is held fixedly in place by metal rivets or other suitable fastenings, b. In the center of the strip, B, is a slot, C. At the bottom of the strips, A, and across the upper surfaces thereof, is
whic is secured to the strips, A, by metal rivets or other suitable fastenings, c. Said strip, D, projects beyond the edges of strips, A, and is secured at right angles thereto. Near each end of strip, D, is a slot,
Between slot E and the strips, A, are small holes or apertures, F. Tothe upper surfaces of the strips, A, and at right angles and useful Improve- A represents suitable masecured a strip,-
thereto, and intermediate the strips B and D, secure a cross piece, G. Attached to the verticalv strips, A, and running parallel to and above the strip, G, is a buckle strap, A similar strap, I, is attached in the same manner to the strips. A, parallel to and above the strip, D. I pass the free end of the buckle strap, J, through the slot, C, in the strip, B, and adjust said strap to said strip, B, by securing the free end to the strap proper in any suitable way. small, narrow crotch strap, K, is passed through the apertures, F, in the strip, D. his strap is adjusted to strip, D, by tying the ends thereof in knots, cl, on the under side of said strip. To the strap, K, is slidably fixed a long strap, L, having a looped end, 6', through which loop passes the strap, K. Short buckle straps, M, pass through the slots, E, in the strip, D, the free ends of which are secured, respectively, by rivets. f, to the straps proper. I secure additional straps, N, to the upper surfaces of the strips,
These straps, N, are secured in an oblique position and are fastened just above the strap, H, and are used to fit over the shoulders of the carrier.
11 practising my invention, I place the load to be carried upon the frame and pass the straps, J and L, around the load and fasten such straps. I then pass the straps, I and I, around the load and fasten them. The adjustment of the straps referred to secures the load to the frame. The arrangement of the straps and their adjustment to the frame, in the manner heretofore described, provides novel means for securing compactly the load to be carried. The arrangement of the straps, as outlined, serves to make the portage of the load l ss burdensome to t e carrier. The frame, when packed, is then fixed to the back of the carrier, and the straps, N, are passed over his shoulders and buckled to the straps, M.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patents A pack frame comprising vertical strips and cross pieces secured together, the ends of the lower cross-piece being extended beyond the sides of the frame, shoulder straps each secured at one end to the side ext-ensions and at the other end to the upper portion of the frame, a crotch strap secured at its ends to the lower cross piece and a ver- In testimony whereof, I affix my signatical strap slidably connected thereto, a ver ture in the presence of tWo subscribing wit- 10 tical b le strap securad to the1 upper cross nesses. piece or engaging sai vertica strap, cross a 5 buckle straps secured to said vertical strips JOHN GLACK for securely fastening, in conjunction with Witnesses: said vertical straps, the load to the frame, J. D. WARNER, substantially as described. ADA M. GILLISPIE.
