IMPROVEMENT IN BUCKLE LOOP AND FASTENER FOR CARRIAGE-TOPS, HARNESS, 84c.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No.
202,683, dated April 23, 1878; application filed March 23, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN WATTERS, of the city of New York, county of New York, and State of New York, have invented an Improved Buckle Loop and Fastener for Carriage-Tops, Harness, Trunk- Straps, &c., of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a plan or top view of my improved carriage loop and fastener, showing it applied to a strap. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of said strap and fastener. Fig. 3 is a cross-section of the same on line 0 c, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a detailed side view of the loop, and Fig. 5 a longitudinal section of the strap and fastener, showing a new construction of clasp or binding for the strap.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
This invention relates to a new loop attachment and clasp to harness, trunk-straps, carriage-tops, or the like, wherever such loops are to be made of metal, for the reception of the ends of the straps that are tucked into them.
The invention consists in providing the loop, which is made of metal, with two contiguous downwardly-projectin g lugs at or near the middle of its bottom, by means of which lugs said loop can be secured in place on the strap or curtain in manner hereinafter de scribed.
The'invention also consists in a new binding or clasp for attaching the buckle to the strap.
1n the accompanying drawing, the letter A represents a leather strap or curtain, carrying a buckle, B, which is attached to it. C is a metallic loop, placed upon the strap or curtain A, for receiving the end of another strap, which is connected to the strap or curtain Aby means of the buckle B, or for receiving theend of a strap, D, (shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1,) which may be attached with one end to the strap or curtain A directly, and with the other to the buckle B.
The loop 0 is made of sheet metal, about as wide as the strap A, and of such height above said strap that it will receive the strap to be put into or through it. Said loop is constructed of one single piece of sheet metal,
bent into proper shape, and so as to form at the middle of its bottom two downwardly-projecting lugs, a a, which are contiguous to each other, and which, when put through the strap A and bent below the same, in manner shown in Fig. 3, will securely fasten the loops in place on the strap.
Heretofore harness or carriage loops were secured in place to the straps or curtains either by being stitched thereto, or by being riveted thereto, or by downwardly-projecting lugs at the edges. In each of these cases the bottom of the loop had to be made of a separate piece.
By forming the contiguous fasteninglngs a a at or near the middle of the bottom, I am enabled to construct the whole loop, with top, bottom, sides, and fastening-lugs, of one single piece and at one operation, and to conveniently secure it in place on the strap or curtain, or wherever desired.
The loop may be duplicated on the same strap, if desired.
The end of the strap Ais bound or clamped with a metal binding or clasp, I), which is indicated in Fig. 5, and laps over the top and bottom of the strap, as shown, and which serves also to secure the buckle Bin position; or the buckle may be attached to a sheetmetal plate, d, which is placed entirely on top of the strap A, as shown in Fig. 2. These metal plates 1) or d are preferably riveted to the strap, or otherwise properly secured.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The strap or curtain loop 0, made of one single piece of sheet metal, and provided with downwardly-projecting contiguous lugs a a at or near the middle of its bottom,substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The combination of the metal clasp b, which laps over top and bottom of the strap, with the buckle B, and with a loop, 0, provided with the projecting lugs a a, substantially as specified.
