Description

W. F. OSBORNE.
SUSPENDER BUCKLE.
(No Model.)
Patented Deo. 15

UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
\VILBUR F. OSBORNE, OF ANSONIA, CONNECTICUT.
SUSPENDER-BUCKLE.
SEPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 332,425, dated December 15, 1885.
Application filed October 22, 1885. Serial No. 180,654.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, XVILBUR F. OSBORNE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ansonia, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented new and useful Improvements in Suspender-Buckles,of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to Suspender-buckles composed of a front plate having end flanges supporting the ends of apin, to which a clamping-lever is pivoted.
The objects of my invention are to improve the construction of such buckles, whereby the structure is'rendered more strong and durable than ordinary buckles of the same class; to provide novel means which constitute a rest for the lever when in its closed or clamping position, and to provide novel means for preventing the end flanges of the front platefrom spreading or moving in adirection away from the ends of the lever.
The objects of my invention I accomplish in the manner and by the means hereinafter described and claimed, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a rearplan view of abuckle embodying my invention; Fig. 2, aperspective view of parts detached; Fig. 3, a sectional view taken on the line a: :r of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 a sectional view taken on the line y y of Fig. 1.
In order to enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now de scribe the samein detail, reference being made to the drawings, where The number 1 indicates the front plate or frame of the buckle, having at each end a laterally-projecting flange, 2, the extremities of which are bent toward each other, as at 3-. To the upper and lower ends of the flanges are rigidly attached, respectively, theextremities of two rods, 4, which may be made of wire having any suitable shape in cross-section, such shape, as here shown, being circular. The rigid attachment of the rods is accomplished in a satisfactory manner by extending (No model.)
their ends through perforations in the flanges, and then upsetting or riveting the projecting ends of the rods upon the outer surfaces of the flanges, as at 5. The end flanges of the buckleframe are thus rigidly connected and braced and prevented from spreading outwardly, so that the rigidity of the structure and its strength and durability are largely increased. To the top red is pivoted thclever 6, and this is effected by providing the lever at its ends with lips 7, which are bent around the rod so that the lever can turn thereon. Thelever is rectilinear in shape, and is provided with the usual notched flange, 8, to engage the suspenderweb. WVhen the lever is in its closed position, its lower edge bears against the bottom rod, and the latter thereby serves as a rest for the lever. The front plate of the buckle is furnished with a hook, 9, or any other contrivance for connecting it with the usual suspender-end.
I am aware that the lever of a buckle has heretofore been pivoted to a pin supported at its ends by end flanges on the buckle-frame or front plate; but I am not aware that the end flanges of a buckle-frame have been rigidly connected and braced by two rods the ends of which are rigidly secured to the end flanges to prevent them from spreading outwardly, with a lever pivoted to one rod and adapted to rest against the other rod.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is The combination, in a suspender-buckle, of aplate having end flanges, two rods connected, respectively, with the upper and lower ends of the flanges, and a lever pivotally connected with one of the rods and adapted to rest against the other rod, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILBUR F. OSBORNE.
