Abstract

24,100. Reid, A. Oct. 29. Fastenings, strap. In a cycle pedal strap or toeclip consisting of a centre piece a with four tails or ends b integral therewith, the ends c of the centre piece are cut at an angle to make the front shorter than the back, so that, when the tails are tightened around the end plates of the pedal, the strap is tilted forward to suit the shape of the rider's boot. As shown in Fig. 6, the ends b pass through the eyes f of keepers e, down inside the pedal, up along the outside, and again through the eyes, corresponding ends upon the opposite sides being secured together over the centre piece by buckles d. The keener may be of leather, brass, canvas, &c, and may be made by the insertion of a small piece g between the doubled band e', the three thicknesses being secured together by riveting. When the pedal plate has a spike, this is passed between the small piece g and the outside part of the keeper. As modifications, the keepers being dispensed with, the tails may be passed down outside the pedal plate, up along the inside, through the opening below the ends c, round themselves near the centre piece, and finally down again inside the pedal so as to form a half-hitch, the ends being fastened, if desired, under the pedal spindle by buckles or the like; or, the tails may be passed down inside the pedal, up outside, and down again inside, being fastened under the spindle as before ; or, the tails, passed down outside the pedal and up inside, may be brought round to the front and buckled on the two sides in the middle of the centre piece ; or, as shown in Fig. 7, the tails, passed down outside and then up inside the pedal, may be carried through the openings below the ends c and through slots j near the middle of the centre piece, the four ends being finally fastened by buckles d.
