surface of the breast plate. The bell cran lever is thus encased and a space is formed between the angled trunnion edge It and the edges of the flanges 2, whereby the detachable end T3 of the belt may pass and be held in its position parallel with the permanently locked end A of the belt. Thus the detachable end B of the belt is concealed when in use.
The flanges 2 are also provided with alined apertures at its opposite end for the reception of pintles 6 of a second bell crank lever. The pintles, before being permanently confined in their hearing apertures by the folded flanges, have fitted thereon ears 7 of a grip shoe 8, which ears are transversely slotted for the reception of the pintles, and owing to said slots the elongated surface of the grip shoe may be moved in or out with relation to the inner surface of the breast plate 1, whereby the detachable end B of the belt is frictionally gripped between the associated surfaces of the breast plate and shoe.
The short leg 9 of the second bell crank lever is of the cam type and is adapted to engage the juxtaposed surface of the grip shoe when the long arm 9 of said lever is depressed below the line of the breast plate flanges, as shown in Figure 1. In this position the short arm of the bell crank lever acts upon the grip shoe to pinch the strap between its surface and the inner surface of the breast plate, whereby the belt, as a whole, is firmly held in any predetermined position. is thus apparent that the belt, when gripped, is not subjected to wear or a biting strain,- due to the large gripping area of the shoe.
It is to be noted that the breast plate is transversely bowed so that the two members 1 and 8, as may be seen from Figure 4-, occupy portions of concentric circles. F or this reason, added strength is secured, both for the shoe and for the breast plate. The member 9 is correspondingly curved and fits the inner side of the shoe 8. When a strap end is placed between the members 1 and 8, and such members clamped or forced towards each other, it is to be noted that the engagement is throughout the entire surface and not merely at the ends, or margins. If the shoe and the breast plate had been substantially flat, the middle portions To all whom it may concern Be it known that T, ADAM PRIMAK, a citi zen of the United States, and resident of Kenosha, in the county of liienosha and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buckles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention refers to strap buckles, and it has for its particular object to provide a friction grip buckle for belts, wherein the detachable end of the belt is gripped by a combination bell crank lever and shoe and the detachable end of the belt is positioned under the fixed end to thus present a neat appearance and to primarily hold. the detachable belt end without subjecting the same to chewing or wear.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter set forth with reference to the accompanying drawings and subsequently claimed.
In the drawings Figure 1 represents a sectional elevation of a strap buckle embodying the features of my invention, the section being indicated by line l-il of Figure 2.
Figure 2 is an inverted plan view of the same.
Figures 3 and l are cross sectional views, the plane of the same being indicated by lines 3 3 and 44, respectively, of Figures 1 and 2, and
Figure 5 is a detail view showing the grip shoe element of my improved buckle.
Referring by characters to the drawings, 1 represents a breast plate having its longitudinal edges folded to form inturned flanges 2. Mounted between the flanges is a bell crank lever 3 having trunnions 4-, which trunnions enter apertures of the flanges 2 and are permanently fixed intheir bearings by folded flanges of the breast plate .into the finished position, as shown in Figures 1 and 2. The other leg of the bell crank lever is provided with a tooth biting surface 5, which surface engages the permanent end A of the belt by pitching the same between the toothed edge and the inner surface of the breast plate 1. When the permanent end of the belt A is so locked, the long leg 3 of the bell crank is folded inwardly near the inner would bow considerably under the clamping pressure and the binding would be solely at the marginal edges of the strap.
From the foregoing description, it will be apparent that when the belt is adjusted to the waist line of the wearer, the long arm 9' of the bell crank lever is swung outwardly so as to develop a wide throat between the grip shoe and breast plate, whereby the detachable end B of the strap can readily be inserted and drawn up to the required distance for tightening the belt, and said detachable end is then passed over the trunnion angle surface X of the first bell crank lever, whereby it is held between its surface and the clothing of the wearer. Hence the end of the belt is not erqoosed and loops, or other means, for confining the loose belt end are dispensed with.
WVhile' I have shown and simple exemplification of my invention, it
described a ing the permanently attaching end of the strapto the breast plate, a second bell crank lever having pintles mounted in the plate flanges, and a transversely curved. ripping she-e provided with g e slots engaging said pi tles, saidgr Jping shoe being adapted to pinch the detachable end" of thestrap to the inner surface of the plate.
In" testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand at Kenosha, in the county of Kenosha and State of Wisconsin.
