Description

Sept. 23 1924. 1,509,693
R. SCHOCH CLOTHESLINE FASTE NI JR Filed Sent. 26. 1923 XNVENTOR ATTORNEY Patented Sept. 23, 1924.
UNITED STATES RICHARD SCI-IOCH, OF. NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
CLOTHESLINE FASTENER.
Application filed September 26, 1923'.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Rrcnann Sonoorr, a citizen of the United States, a resident of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clothesline Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in devices for connecting the ends of cords and the like in adjusted relation.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive and easily operated device for fastening the ends of small ropes, as clothes lines in a secure manner, wholly avoiding the use of clamps and like extraneous parts, the device being of integral construction.
A further purpose is to produce a fastener for holding the alined ends of cords under the utmost possible tension, without slipping or loosening.
Another aim is in the production of a' fastener permitting ready adjustment of the cord ends whereby the tension may be in creased or diminished as desired.
These and similar other aims, objects and purposes are attained by the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawing, forming part of this disclosure, and in which Figure 1 is a plan view showing a preferred embodiment of the invention and illustrating the application.
Figure 2 is a side or edge view of the same.
Figure 3 is a plan View of a modified form of fastener. V
Figure 1 is a similar view showing a further modification in construction.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the numeral designates one end of a small rope, cord or line and 11 the other end of the same, the main portion being extended as indicated.
As stated, the object of the invention is to provide a device for holding the ends in adjusted tensional relation and the device as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, consists of a flat metallic plate, generally designated by the numeral 12.
This plate, which is substantially an elongated rectangle in shape, may have straight parallel side edges or they may be fanci- Serial No. 664,843.
fully formed as illustrated; either one or both the ends contain angularly converging recesses 13, presenting projections 14: having well rounded edges.
Spaced from the inner ends of the recesses 13 and also fromeach other, are circular openings 15 and 16 through which the cords may be freely passed, one of the cords, after passing through, the opening 15 being secured by a knot 17 for the purpose of preventing the end from being withdrawn through the opening.
The other end 10 of the cord is passed through the other opening 16 in the plate and its end passed through the bight of the knot 18 as clearly indicated, forming an effective hitch capable of resisting any pull, the cord being gripped between the inner edges of the recess in an obvious manner.
It will be apparent that the plate can be reversed end for end, which, is the reason for having both ends recessed, as otherwise a recess in one end would sufiice.
In the modification shown in Fig. 3, a plate 20 of like character is provided with similar end notches or recesses 21 and a circular opening 22 near one end.
An elongated opening 23 is made in the body of the plate through which the cord may freely pass and run over a pulley or roller 241 having an axial bore 25, into the ends of which extend lugs 26, integral with the sides of the slot 23, to act as trunnions on which the roller 24 can freely turn.
The arrangement of the cord and its knots is essentially the same as before described.
Fig. 4 shows a slight change in construc tion, the plate being essentially the same as described, as is also the single angular recess 31 between the end members 32.
The openings 33 and 3 1 are in all respects like the opening 15 and 16 but the end 35, opposite the recess 31, is extended, narrowed and bent reentrantly to form a hook 36 which may be used for attaching purposes to a loop, bight of a cord or the like, constituting a convenient device for the purpose set forth.
-While certain preferred embodiments of this device have been shown and described, it will be understood that changes in the form, arrangements, proportions, sizes and details thereof may be made without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim. as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A cord fastener comprising an elongated rectangular metallic plate having openings through the inain portion thereof adapted to permit the passage ofa cord, and having recessesin its ends suited to engage and bite a cord entered therein from either side of the plate, said recesses being convergent'ly inclined to present projections having well rounded edges.
2. A cord fastener comprising an elongated rectangular metallic plate having openings through the main portion thereof adapted to permit the passage of a cord, and having recesses in its ends suited to engage and bite a cord entered therein, a roller disposed in one of said openings, and )rojec tions integral with the side edges of the opening on which said roller is revoluhly mounted.
This specification signed and witnessed this 24th day of September, 1923.
