Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented @et 15, 19i.
Application filed. July 1.5, 1918. Serial No. 245,112.
To all whom. t may concern.'
Be it known that I, CHARLES BLAMFHELD, a subject ot Great Britain, and a resident of Boston, in the county otl Sutlolk and Couimonwealth ot' Massachusetts, have invented certain new yand useful Improvements in Toys, 'ot' which the following is a full, clear, and exact speciication.
The object ot this invention is the construction of a toy wherein there are parts removably secured together, and which, while easily detachable, will remain united without danger of accidental disconnection, and will also be capable O'f a number ot different angles of adjustment.
TWhile the invention is capable of a wide` range o' applications, l have illustrated it as applicable to the movable parts ot' an an1- mate object. as a horse whose head, neck. legs and tail are represented as detachably united by the device constituting one feature of my invention, the curved joining surfaces constituting another important feature.
ln the drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side sectional view ot a toy embodying my improvements, the section being through the irregular line X-X in Fig. 2.5 Fig. 2 is an end view from the front. of the body portion of the toy. Fig. 3 is la side view of one ot' theiegs of the tov. showing the connecting device projectingtherefrom. Fig. l is a side view ot' one ot the connecting` devices alone. Fig. 5 is an end view of the same. Fig. G is a perspective Aview ot another form ot the connecting device. V
Referring to Fig. 1. the numeral 1 designates the body ot the toy horse selected for illustration, :2 is the head, 3 is the neck, 1, 5, (l and 7 are the legs, and 9 is the tail.
The preferable term ot connecting device consists oi a slender metal tube 10 having yielding material at its ends. such as the threads 11 shown in Fig. 4. lt. is more economical to construct the same by placing a number of threads, or a length of tape, upon a small metal plate and then bending the latter into a slender tube tightly clutching the yielding material. y
0r the connecting` device may be made by simply bending over on itself a tlat piece ot sheet metal. and having it tightly clutching between its halves a length ot` tape 12. such tlat pin 17 being illustrated n Fig. 6.
ln each removable member a suitable hole 1s made, as at 13. into which one of the connecting devices 10 or 17 is firmly secured. By having the yielding material at the inner ends as well as at the outer ends ot' the pins 10, 17, glue may be used for insuring their lirm anchorage in the holes.
To give a perfect lit between a member and the body ateach et the ditterent radially disposed positions, the holes 1T should radiate trom a single point. and the surface ot the body thereat should be curved concentric with such point ot radiation. this curvature being convex, while the corresponding part ot the member should be concaved to tit` it.
For the neck and tail 3, 9, a single line of holes is provided tor each. as shown in Fig. 2. but for the legs the body 1 is formed with two lines of holes, as shown at the lower part ot the body 1 in Fig. 2, one line for one leg. and the other for the other leg.
ln putting the parts together, all that. needs to be done is to push the pins 10 into the. holes which allow the desired positions. the threads or filaments 11 giving the triction which serves to retain the members together. The threads of course fold over the end ot the tubal 10 as the latter is thrust into a hole 14. and till substantially all tie space between the tubular pin and the hole.
lt frequently happens that' in certain positionso't` the legs the Jfeet do not all tour vcontact with the support on which the horse is stood. Consequently l provide a small wedge 15 tor introduction between the supportand the toot out of contact therewith` as shown in Fig. 1.
Although l have described the pin 10 as cylindrical. and show it in Fig. 5, l do not restrict myself to such form. as it may be made flat as illustrated in Fig. 6. and a length of tape 1G used instead of the threads 11. The ends of the tape l prefer to glue together' against a side ot the plate or pin 17. The operation, however, is substantially like that of the cylindrical pins, the tape giving the same frictional resistance to prevent the too-easy Withdrawal thereof.
ilVhat l claim is:
l. rThe combination with tvvo objects designed to be removably attached one to the other, of a pin projecting from one of the olojects having yielding` material attached to the y projecting end, the other object having a hole -tor snugly receiving the pin.
2. rlihe combination with tvvo objects designed to be removably attached one to the other, of a tubular pin projecting from one of the objects, the pin having numerous filaments clamped therein and extending for a distance from its outer end, the other object having a hole for snugly receiving the pin.
3. rlhe combination with two ohjects designed to be removably attached one to the other, each hzwing a hole therein, ot' a pin having a mass of threads projecting from each end and fitted to be thrust snugly into the respectii'e holes.
et.- 'lhe con'ihination of two `objects one of which has a cylindrically convex portion and the other a concave portion fitting the convex portion, the convex portion having a plurality ot' holes the prolongations of which would meet at the center of curvature of the convexY portion, and a. pin projecting from the concave portion and fitted to 'trictionall-y enter an): oneofthe holes in the convex; portion.
A connecting device comprising a pin having numerous threads extending from each end thereof.
G. t connecting device comprising atuhular pin having a mass ot' threads clamped -Within it and projecting 'from both ends.
lin testimon)y that l claim the foregoing invention, l l ave. hereunto set nl v hand this 13th day ot July, i918.
