\VILLIAM J. O. DOYLE, OF ASPEN, COLORADO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO TIMOTHY BUOKLEY, OF SAME PLACE.
FUSE-IGNITOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 481,012, dated August 16, 1892.
Application filed December 29, 1891. Serial No. 416,467. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. C. DOYLE, of Aspen, in the county of Pitkin and State of Colorado, have invented a new and Improved Fuse-lgnitor, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in fuse-ignitors. It is well known that in blasting it is a common practice to fire a number of fuses and charges simultaneously, and this is usually a dangerous operation, as certain of the fuses are likely to miss fire, and in that case they may go 05 accidentally after the danger is supposed to have passed.
The object of my invention is to producea simple device by means of which any number of fuses may be safely held and simulta neously fired, so that there will be no chance of a miss-fire, and also to produce a device of the character described which is very simple and cheap and which may be used either in wet or dry blasting.
To this end my invention consists in a fuseignitor, the construction of which will be hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device in open position. Fig. 2 is abroken plan view of the same with the fuses therein, the fuses being placed in position for firing; and Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the device.
The body of the ignitor consists of two similar block- like pieces 10 and 11, which must correspond in shape, but which may be of any desired shape, and these members 10 and 11 are hinged together, as shown at 12, so that they may be folded one upon the other, as in Figs. 2 and 8. The parts are provided with an ordinary fastening 13, by means of which they may be held together. On three sides of the inner face of the part 10 are short semi-cylindrical grooves 14, which extend to the edges of the body, and on the opposite part 11 are similar grooves 14 which when the parts 10 and 11 are closed together register with the grooves 14, as shown in Fig. 3, and the two grooves thus fit closely upon the fuse.
In the back portion of the members 10 and 11 are registering grooves 15 and 15, which are adapted to hold the fuse by which the others are fired, as hereinafter described, and the groove 15 connectswith the several grooves 14 by small branch grooves 16, as best shown in Fig. 1, which grooves are adapted to contain fine powder, so as to convey fire from the groove 15 to the grooves 14, and, if desired, ordinary black powder may be mixed damp, so as to form a paste, and molded into these grooves 16 and allowed to dry, so that it will be held firmly in place and will not be likely to spill.
It will be understood that the fuse- holding grooves 14 and 14 may be made of any desired length within the limits of the body and that a greater or less number may be used than is shown in the drawings.
WVhen the device is used, the fuses 17, which lead to the various charges to be exploded, are fastened in the grooves 14 14 the powder 18 is inserted in the grooves 16, a short fuse 19 is inserted in the grooves 15 15, and the members 10 and 11 are firmly fastened together by the fastening 13. If the device is to be used for wet blasting, the edges of the body members 10 and 11 may be first smeared with cartridge-soap, so as to effect a water-tight joint.
It will be understood that the fuses 17 may be of any length to adjust them to the dif ferent distances of the charges with which they connect, and when the fuse 19 is lighted the fire will be conveyed by means of the powder 18 to the several fuses 17 and the charges connected with said fuses will be exploded.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A fuse-ignitor comprising a two-part body having registering grooves therein adapted to hold fuses, branch grooves connecting the fuse-holding grooves, and a fastening device tohold the parts of the body toand branch grooves connecting the fuse-holdgether, substantially as described.
ing grooves, substantially as described. 2. A fuse-i nitor comprisin a two-part 1 7 body, the menibers of which are hinged to- WILLIAM D01 gether and provided with a suitable fastcn- Vitnesses:
ing, a series of fuse-holding grooves produced JAs. A. DONEGAN, in the body and extending to the sides thereof, H. L. MCNAIR.
