`pnzlacrnnnr. TUBE-JOINT.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented Eet. 3, '1914'.
Application led March 18, 1913. Serial No. 755,226.
To all 'whom t may concern Be it known that I, MATHIAS BLAHA, ca rpenter, a subject of the Kin of Bavarla 1n the German Empire, resi ing at Berlin- Lichtenberg, in the Kingdom of Prussia, inftheGerman Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Detachable Tube-Joints; and I do hereby declarev the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which .it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to detachable tube joints, andhas for an object to provide a joint especially adapted for the frameworks of air craft, and the 1ike,'and the invention contemplates the provision of a joint which will be readily united and detached, and which when in position, and effective union.
It is another object of my invention to 'provide a detachable tube joint which will be simple, and constituted of a minimumy number of parts.
In the accompanying drawings'forming a part of this application, and in which similar referencev symbols indicate corresponding parts in the several views z-Figure 1 is an elevational view, partly in section, of the members of the joint detached; and Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the members united.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, a and e designate the ends of two tubes to be joined, the latter of which is-provided,
`in spaced relationto its end, with anandisnular groove cl, preferably formed b placing the material of the tube radia ly inward, whereby to provide a corresponding annular bead 71. projecting into the interior of the tube. The tube e is further slitted, as at c, for a distance from its end to admit of expansion and contraction in receiving the tube a which is of a diameter to snugly lit within the same, and is provided with a groove b at a suitable distance from its end to accommodate the bead L when the two tubes are inter-fitted.v
The groove may be formed in a manner similar to that described of d above, and as will more clearly appear from an inspection of Fig. 2.
will form a strong to the ,A sleeve f is slidable -on the tube e, and
is provided, preferably midwa .ofits ends,
with a perforation through w ich'projects a lingeng carried on the free end of a iat spring secured upon the4 exterior face of the sleeve. The finger g is adapted to occupy the groove d in the tube c when the former has been moved to the position shown i-n Fig. 2, when contraction ofthe tube e is edected to prevent longitudinal lwithdrawal of the tubes, and to prevent accidental displacement of the sleeve f.
In assembling the joint the tube a is fitted in the tube e, the end of the former vstriking the bead h, and1 thereby causin an expansion of the outer tube through t e slot c until the groove b arrives in registry with the said bead, whereupon the tube e will con tract thereabout due to the inherent stress of the material. The sleeve f is now moved osition shown in Fig. 2, positively preventing accidental expansion of the sleeve and is automatically locked in position by the linger g. .The detachment of the joint may be eifected by prying up the at spring i and moving the sleeve!)e on the tube e, when it will be seen the tubes may readily be separated;
I have illustrated and described preferred Vand satisfactory construction, but changes could be made within the spirit and scope of my invention.
I claim In a detachable tube joint, the combination of two tubes having the endsthereof tted within one another and provided with a complementary bead.I and groove to prevent longitudinal withdrawalv of the'tubes, the outer tube being slotted to admit of eX- pansion and contraction and provided with an external annular groove, and a sleeve slidable on said tube and provided with a spring-pressed nger adapted to occupy the' groove formed on said tube, whereby to prevent accidental displacement of the parts. In testimony whereof, I have affixed my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
MATHIAS BLAHA.
