PATENT. OF CE.
MUSICI-IROLL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters'Patent No. 761,449, dated May 31, 1904.
Application filed July 20, 1903. Serial No. 166,211. (No model.) i
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, TIMOTHY F. CoLLINs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Meriden, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Music-Rolls, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to music-rolls generally employed for the reception of perforated paper record-sheets which are wound. thereon and are ordinarily used in connection with.
to be placed in the instrument, while they may be removed therefrom, thus leaving the roll, with the record wound thereon, in the shape of a plain cylinder without any projections, so that a number thereof may be packed without making especial preparations in protecting the heads and the trunnions projecting therefrom, such as may be found in devices of this kind heretofore in use.
Further objects of my invention may be In the accompanying drawings, in which similar characters denote similar parts, Figure 1 represents a central longitudinal section of a roll made in accordance with myinvention. Fig. 2 is a similar section of the roll-body, taken on a plane at right angles tothat of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an end view thereof- Fig. 4: shows one of the roll-heads detached, and Fig. 5 illustrates one of the head-locking members or plugs in detail. As above stated, it is one of the objects 0 my invention to provide a music-roll the heads for which may be inserted and removed when' desired, so that one pair of heads furnished for an instrument will be sufiicient, and consequently the cost of furnishing rolls for use in connection with such heads will be reduced, an item which is of considerable importance when it is considered that thousands upon thousands of such rolls are employed and new records are constantly making their appearance.
' My improved roll comprises a tubular body 10, preferably made of pasteboard or equivalent material and chambered or open at both ends to receive the shank portions 11 12 of flanged heads 18 14, respectively. The heads 13 14 are of such diameter as to accommodate or receive between them record ormusic strips wound upon any roll-body 10, and the shank portions 11 and 12 fit into the tube, so as to be readily inserted or removed therefrom, their lengths being such as to afford a substantial support for each end of the roll.
The heads 13 14 are preferably provided with shoulders 15 16, whereby the roll is held against longitudinal movement in the instrument, and trunnions 17 18, are secured to said heads and serve as journals for the roll, one of said trunnions 18 having wings 19, whereby the head 14: may be brought into rotati've connection with the rewinding mechanism of the instrument, as usual. Means are provided for locking the heads 13 14-..against rotation in the body 10, so that the supporting fit between the shanks 11 and 12 and the tube 10 may be preserved, these means .comprising plugs 20, secured to the tube 10 at a short distance from its ends and having in the preferred form thereof shown diametrical slots 21, adapted to receive corresponding tenons 522, secured to .or forming part of said shanks 11 12. Other forms of clutch-surfaces may, however, be employed without departure from the invention. 7
Changes may be made in the particular organization and construction of the several parts of my improved roll, the invention not being limited to the precise construction shown. I 1 Having thus described my invention, what 'I claim is 2. The combination, with a tubular body portion, of plugs carried by said body portion,
and each having a slot; removable, flanged heads having shank portions fitting into the ends of said tube, and each having a clutch member for entering the slot of the plug.
3. A roll comprising a tubular body portion provided with interior plugs each having a clutch-surface; and removable heads, each having a shank provided With a clutch-surface adapted to engage the clutch-surface of the plug.
4. A music-roll comprising a tubular body,
