- York city, Bronx, county and State of New UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD H. HOLDEN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SURVEYORS REEL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed ay 11, 1906. Serial No. 316,278.
T0 at whom it may c nc rn: 1 At its outer end each of the arms is notched,
Be it known that I, EDWARD H. HOLDEN, a as at 20, the notch having a flaring mouth 21 citizen of the United States, residing at New 1 for readily guiding the tape 22 into the notch. To one of the arms is pivoted a hook 23, that serves to secure the inner end of the tape to the reel.
When the reel is folded, the arms 11 and 12 rest against opposite sides of arm 10, Fig. 3. If the reel is to be unfolded, the arms 11 and 12 are swung on their pivots 15 16 until they strike the abutments 17 and then the locking-pin 19 is introduced to hold the arms in their open position. In this way a rigid tricrural structure is obtained, upon which the tape may be readily wound. By making the arms hollow and of rectangular form each arm offers a double support for the tape, so that the latter is not liable to become bent or broken.
What I claim is- 1. A reel composed of a pair of disks, an arm immovably secured thereto, a pair of ad ditional arms pivoted to the disks, means for limiting the movement of the pivoted arms, and means for locking said arms, substantially as specified.
2. A reel composed of a pair of disks, a hollow flanged arm immovably secured thereto, a pair of additional hollow arms pivoted to the disks and adapted to engage the flanges of the immovable arm, and a locking-pin adapted to engage the pivoted arms, substantially as specified.
Signed by me at New York city, Manhattan, New York, this th day of May, 1906.
EDWARD H. HOLDEN.
No. 837,931. Patented. Dec. 11, 1906.
York, have invented new and useful Im- 1 provements in Surveyors Reels, of which the 1 following is a specification.
,This invention relates to a reel more particularly designed for carrying a surveyors steel tape and which is so constructed that it may be readily folded and pocketed during the survey.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of my improved reel, showing the tape wound thereon. Fig. 2 is an end view thereof with the tape omitted; Fig. 3, a side view showing the reel folded; Fig. 4, an enlarged longitudinal section on line 4 4, Fig. 2; Fig. 5, a detail of the means for securing the tape to the reel; and Fig. 6, an enlarged crosssection on line 6 6, Fig. 1..
The reel is composed, essentially, of three arms 10, 11, and 12, that extend with'their inner ends between a pair of disks 13. Each arm is made hollow and of square or rectangular form in cross-section, Fig. 6. The arm 10 is immovably secured to disks 13 by rivets 14, while arms 11 and 12 are pivoted to said disks, as at 15 16, the arms 11 and 12 being arranged symmetrically to the left and right of arm 10. The pivots 15 and 16 extend at right angles to disks 13, so that the arms 11 and 12 are adapted to swing in a plane parallel to the disks. At its inner end the two opposite sides of arm 10 are flanged, as at 17, to constitute stops or abutments for arms 11 and 12. The disks 13 are perforated in axial alinement with arm 10, as at 18, to admit a locking-pin 19 into the obtuse angle formed between the arms 11 and 12,; Fig. 4.
