N. KOLLE. FACE PLATE FOR BURIAL GASKETS.
No. 565,282. Patented Aug. 4, 1896.
wzch am J60 zze JIVVEWZO? IIII WITNESSES UNITED STAT S PATENT OFFICE.
NICHOLAS KOLLE, OF DUBUQUE, IOW'A.
FACE-PLATE FOR BU RlAL-CASKETS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 565,282, dated August 4, 1896.
Application filed June 4:, 1896. Serial No. 594,320. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, NICHOLAS KOLLE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Dubuque, in the county of Dubuque and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Face-Plates for Burial-Caskets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it ap pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a face-plate for burial-caskets which is composed of two sections connected to each other in such manner that when they are swung back to uncover the opening in the casket the outer section or the one carrying the catch can be arranged to expose either side of the same and yet have said sections folded one upon the other to occupy little space, the particular manner of connecting the sections also permitting them to be extended on a line with each other in case it is desired to support a wreath, or for other purposes.
WVith the above ends in view the invention consists in the peculiar construction of the means for connecting the sections of the face-plate to each other, as hereinafter fully described, and particularly set forth in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a burial-casket with my improved face-plate applied thereto, the sections of the face-plate being arranged on a line with each other. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view with the outer section of the face-plate folded down to expose the outer side thereof. Fig. 3 is atransverse sectional view with the outer section folded to expose the inner side thereof.
A designates the cover or lid of the burialcasket, which is provided with the usual opening at the head portion thereof, and on each side of this opening the said cover or lid has attached thereto slotted plates at a, between which is located a catch-plate a.
The fixtures a a. and a are duplicated, so that the face-plate hereinafter described can be hinged on either side of the opening.
The face-plate is made up of two sections B and B the adjoining edges of which are preferably beveled, as shown. The section B has secured at its outer edge two plates 1) I), having curved projections which engage the slotted plates at a on either side of the opening in the burial-casket and form hinges, while the outer edge of the section B is provided centrally with a suitable catch 1), that engages either'one of the catch-plates a.
Upon the inner side of the section B of the face-plate are secured two plates 0 0, each having outwardly-projectin g ears 0 c, pierced to receive a pivot-pin d, that passes through an eye formed at one end of a link D and positioned between said ears. The links D are also provided with eyes at their outer ends which engage fixtures E, attached to the section B of the face-plate, said fixtures being each made up of a length of wire one end of which is bent upon itself to form a loop 6, through which the securing-screws pass, while the. other part is bent to present a loop 6', that extends across the inner edge of said section B a slight distance therefrom and beyond each side thereof.
The eyes at the outer ends of the links D engage the loops 6 of the fixtures E, and by this particular manner of connecting the sections B and B to each other when the faceplate is swung back, as shown in Fig. 1, the section B thereof can be folded down, as shown in Fig. 2, to expose the outer side thereof, or by simply moving said section forward the links D will swing upon their pivots at and their outer ends travel along the loops 6 to the rear ends thereof, thereby permitting the said section B to assume the position shown in Fig. 3 with its inner side exposed.
The construction herein shown and described is provided so that when the name of the departed is placed on the outer side of the section B and a verse or other matter placed on the inner side thereof the faceplate can be arranged to expose either side of the said section B.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. A face-plate for burial-caskets consisting of an inner section B hinged to the lid of the casket and having links pivoted to the inner side thereof at or near the center, and an outer section B provided with loops at its lower edge to which the outer ends of the links are connected, substantially as shown and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination with a burial-casket the lid of which is provided with slotted plates a a and a catch-plate a on each side
