JOHAN l?. BJUELUND, OF RIGHT/ION@ HILL, NEW YRK, ASSIG-NOR DE ONE-HALF TO HENRY M. LSAUCE, 0F BROKL'EE'N, NEV YORK.
Application filed November 7, 1912.
To all whom if may concern Be it known that l, JoHAN F. BJURL'UND, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Richmond l-lill, borough of Queens, county of Queens, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful lmprovement in Package-Fasteners, of which the following is a full, clear, and enact specification.
rllhis invention relates to a class of devices adapted to be used fo" removably securing together a number of articles.
My invention has for its object primarily to provide a package fastener designed to be utilised especially for facilitating the Vwork of fastening and unfastening packages of letters, papers, or other articles so as to be conveniently carried by a person, or otherwise transported, and which is of a form adapted to permit it to be used a great number of times, thereby dispensing with the use of cord, or like means as at present employed and saving the expense incidental thereto by reason of the cord being invariably severed and thrown away when the package is unfastened. rl`hese advantages are mainly accomplished by providing` two corresponding' straps, and upon the ends of said straps is a clasp composed of two mem bers having interfitting tubular parts adapted to be quickly sprung into locked engagement by a catch of a form which permit the members to be easily separated when desired without impairing the usefulness of the device.
A further object of the invention is to provide a package fastener of simple and eilicient construction, and which may be made in various shapes and sizes.
With these and other objects in view, the invention will be hereinafter more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specication, and will then be pointed out in the claims at the end of the description.
1n the drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a package of papers with one form of fastener embodying my invention applied thereon. Fig. 2 is a. top plan of the fastener. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the fastener, and Fig. l is an enlarged View, partly broken away, of the male member `of the fastener.
Specification ofLetters Patent.

rlbe device, or package fastener has pret'- erably two flexible straps 10 and 11, though one, or any desired number of straps may be used, and said straps may be made of canvas, leather, or any other preferred inaterial. lhe straps 10 and 11 are spaced apart in parallel relation, and the central parts thereof are connected by a transverse strap, as 12, which may be utilized as a handle, if desired. rlhe ends of the straps 10 and 11 are adapted to be detachably connected by a clasp, as 13, Awhich is preferably made of metal, and may be constructed in any suitable size as occasion requires.
The clasp 13 is composed of a male member 14 and a female member 15. The male member 1d has a substantially 'lsllaped body portion, or plate 1G whereby an arm 17 and tivo alincd transverse arms, as 18 and 19, are provided. ln proximity to the free ends of the arms 1S and 19 are slots 20 and 21. @ne end of the strap 10 is secured in the slot 2O of the arm 1S, and one end of the strap 11 is likewise secured in the slot 21 of the arm 19. The arm 17 is formed so that it is longitudinally curved, and a part of said arm is bent over so as to provide a tubular portion 22 which `has an elongated slot7 as 23 therein. At the end of the tubular portion 22 adjacent to the arm 18 is a lue' 2li, and in proximity to the opposite end of said tubular portion are alined openings in which is rigidly held a pin 25 which is disposed crossivise with respect to the elongated slot ln the tubu lar portion 22 is a spring catch 26. The spring catch 2G is preferably made of wire of a well known form having one part thereof wrapped spirally around the pin and disposed so that one of its ends rests against the inner surface of the tubular portion. As illustrated, thc central part of the catch is bent laterally in approXimately an lfshape to provide a retaining seat, as at 27, and this L-shaped seat is disposed through the elongated slot 23 and eX- tends some distance beyond the exterior of the tubular portion 22. rthe part of the catch 26 opposite to its pivoted end is guided through the other end of the tubular por tion, and terminates with a ring 28 in alinement with the lug 24k. Obviously by this arrangement the spring catch 26 is tensioned so as to normally serve to forccthe L-shaped retaining seat 27 outwardly of the slot 23 of the tubular portion 22. The female member 15 also has a substantially T-shaped body portion, or plate 29 whereby an arm and two alined transverse arms 31 and 32 are provided. Adjacent to the free ends of the arms 31 and 32 are slots 33 and 33a, respectively. The opposite end of the strap 10 is secured in the slot 33 and the corresponding end of the strap 11 is similarly secured in the slot 33a. The arm 30, like the arm 17 of the female member, is formed so that it is longitudinally curved, and a part of said arm is bent over so as to provide a tubular portion 3a which is of sufficient diameter to permit the tubular portion 22 of the male member to be freely inserted therein. Through dianietrically opposite parts of the tubular portion 341 are elongated slots 35 and 36 one of which is adapted to be registered with the slot 23 of the tubular portion 22 so as to receive the seat 27 of the catch 26 for holding in locked engagement the male and female members when interlitted together.
When the device is employed for fastening a number of letters, papers, or other articles together the straps 10 and 11 are guided around the package. The tubular portion 22 of the male member 14% is then passed into the tubular portion 34 of the female member 15 so that the seat 27 of the catch 26 will be disposed through one of the slots of said female member. The male and female members will thereby be locked together, and to release the members the ring 2S is forced toward the lug 24 against the tension of the catch 26. The retaining seat 27 of the catch 2G will thereby be directed inwardly of the tubular portions ot the members, and the male member may eadily be withdrawn from the female mem- In order to permit a package when secured by the device to be conveniently carried, upon the male member 14 at the juncture of its arms 17, 18, 1S is provided a short tube, or ring 37, and a similar tube, or ring 38 is provided upon the female member 15 at its juncture with the arms 80, 31, 32. By the use of a cord passed through the rings 37 and 38, or by connecting a handle of a suitable form thereto the package may then be carried in this manner, if desired.
In the foregoing description, I have embodied the preferred form of my invention, but I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the principle, or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention, therefore I reserve to myself the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope thereof.
Having thus described, my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1.
