FOLDING UMBRELLA.
APPLICATION HLfn'luLY 26.1916.
INVENTOR Arronxsy's Patented oet. 1, 191s.
W a Z S S mw o T p To all whom itmayconoerm mams. sumen'. SAN Eneircxscodmwblim nasases.. i
Be it known that lliTnoiwL-As-'Smrnny-a citizen ofl the United States,A residing atY cityY and county of San'Franci'scogand State? of California, have invented? new Fand' useful Improvements in 'Folding Umbrellas,kr 'of which the folljoWingis a speci-fication.f-4
This yinvention relates toa'`v foldingumbrella and particularlyto an improvement over my former patent fentitledglolding umbrella, issued '18', lflfnuinbered 1,139,913.l f'
The object of'the presentinventijis 'to improve the Astructure shown "inQ my I 4former patentvand particularly. :to provide aconstruction which will permit ainore rigid Vcoiniection between the umbrella rod andfthe nection between 'the foldable anddetachable meinbersl ,p Further objects Will'hereinafterfappcan` l The invention consistsofthefparts andthe construction and 1combina-tioi-rfof;AV parts as hereinafter more fully; V described f and claimed, having reference to, the' accompany# ing drawings in Whichzi K f Y VFigure 1 is theV central vertical showing the'umbrellaassembled. Y l
Fig; 2 is a similar section vshowing Ithe umbrella in the folded position. l Fig. 3 is a detailed exterior'vie'vv; looking atright anglestoFig. l.'
Fig. 4 is a detailed Aview showing the 'Coiruinbrella rodf and F the section handle. p f
' Referring t0 the drawings in dtail ibwll be seen that the umbrella `proper@consists Suitably securedto thehandle A is ashort l j cientlyeXtended as at 22 to cove-r thekplvotal rod extension 8 and pivotallyy mounted in a slot formed in said rod is a spring actuated latch member 9. The rod carrying the-handle is inserted in the upper end of the tubu-` nonnine niinitnnn. f
lar vvhen thehandle lis' applied7 'and a 'slotlf is formedin the tubular -rod 2 With lwhich#tlielatclrengages to form a lock betiveenthetnbularrod k and handle carrying Patented oct.1,191e. Application fnea'luly 2 6, wie ,Serial No. 111,394,
-i'ornied between Ythe pin 12, withy kconnected sleeve 1,1,l and-theftipf:by'a Wire rod 14, and
Iso that'itunay befolded over as shown in Fig. 2*, or inserted as s'liownin Fig.rr 1. rThe latch/9 serves the function ofa triplelock {sainetime reinforcetheconnection between 1 the* handle* and tub'ular fro'd," thus `pro ducing i ofV tlieifhaiidle with frelation to the: rodw 2,1y a pin 18 hasy beenfprovided.. This pin is rsel curedinlther-rodl lentension 8 and projects Vs'ui'Iic-ientlyf.far beyond Vthe yface ofk the rod. 8 lto permit it to engage with slots 19 formed bothuiri-the tubular-rodand the sleeve 11, yA similari connection "is formedbetvveen the' tip "3x andfthebell shaped cap 5 by providing a fgrooveor' key-way205 on the inner end of jection'l21iformed on the lcap gf turning move- Lrnentfogfthe withrelation.tothei-rodis in ofthe tubular rody in any suitable manner,
t "ffpreferably'I 'by kithe screwy connection shown. The upperuend of the` cap is suffirifgidconnectionzat thisgp'oint.: For the Ap-ljirpose' of reducing any f' turning tendency connections 4 of the ribs, in this manner forming a protection for same and the. coverthe tip 3 adjacent'its inner end, is an annular collar 23 which is cone shaped to form Yalfit with a cone shaped projection 24 formed on the lower end ofthe cap 5. This structure forms a joint which prevents admission of water or grit between the tip and rod, and at the same time forms rigid base for the tip, l
the tubular rod away from the handle. This movement is transmitted through the rod 14:
Land links 15 'and 167 to eject the umbrella vtip which may then be folded over as shown inl Fig. 2. The handle jis next extracted by again depressing the latch 9 and the structure as a whole may be placedin a kcovering and packed away in a comparatively small space, as the length of the structure is considerably reduced.
Theimproved features of the presentinvention is the provision ofthe bell shaped cap 5 which cooperates with the tip 3 to form a water tight joint at this point. It furthermore serves as aconnection kand a projecting member forthe ribs and covering and also reinforces and strengthens the structure as a-whole at this point. The provision of the pin 18 is also anV important feature as it coperates with the tubular 'rod and sleeve 11 to positively prevent turning movement of the handle with relation to the connected parts.
The materials and finish of the several parts of the structure may otherwise be such as the experience and judgment of the manufacturer may dictate.
I ywish it understood that various `changes inform, proportions, and minor details of construction maybe resorted tojwithin the scope of the appended claims, andthat I do not wish to limit myself tothe specific design or constructionhere shown.
Having thus described my invention,
what I claim and desire to secure by Letters f Patent is- Y Y 1. The combination with'a tubular :rod Vand 'a bell-shaped cap secured on the lower end of the rod having an annular shoulder formed thereon and a tapering extension, a rod tip adapted to be inserted in the lower end of the tubular rod, and an annular tapering collar on therod tip adapted to seaton the annular collar of the bell-shaped cap and inclose the tapering extensiorn to vforma water-tightnjoint Ybetweem the rod tip and the interior of the tubular rod.
2. In a folding umbrella, the combination with a tubular rod, of a bell-shaped cap secured on the lower end of the rod, a plurality of connected ribs and stretchers pivotally connected with the rod, the pivotal endsof the ribs being inclosedby the cap, afrod extension or tip adapted to be inserted in the lower end of the tubular rod, means for securing said tipagainst removal, yan annularflange formed on the tip adapted to y,coperate with. the bellnshaped cap to `lform a water-tight joint,4 between the tip and the tubular rod, and means for locking the tip againstk turning movement, said means comprising a projection on the cap adaptedhto enter a groove formed vin the tip...k
3. The vcombination with a tubular rod and abell-,shaped cap secured on the lower end of the rod having an annular shoulder y formedfthereon and a tapering extension, a rod tip adapted to be inserted in the lower end of the tubular rod, an annular tapering collaronthe rod tip adapted to seat on the 4collar ofthe bell-shaped cap and inclose the tapering extension to form a water-tight joint betweenv the rod tip and the interior of the tubular rod, means for securing the rod tip, againstrendwise removal, and means for securing said tip against turning with relation to the tubularrod. f
4. rlhe combination` with a tubular rod anda bell-shaped capl'secured on the lower end of therod having anvannular shoulder formed `thereon and a tapering extension, a rod tip adapted to be inserted in the lower end of theY tubular rod, a tapering fcollar formed on the rod tip adapted to seat on the annular collar of the bell-shaped cap and inclose the tapering extension to form a water-tight joint between the rod tip and the interi/or of the tubularrod, means 'for lsecuring the. rod tip against endwise removal, and means for securing said tip against turning with relation to the'tubular rod, said last-named means comprising a peg on the bell-shaped cap adapted to enter a rooveformed in the rod tip.
n ltestimony whereof I have hereunto set Y t j my hand in the presence of-two subscribing witnesses.
