IMPROVEMENT IN UMBRELLAS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 193,868, dated August 7, 1877 application filed June 18, 1877.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM S. HARRIS, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Umbrella- Handles, of which the following is a specification This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in umbrella handles;

and consists in making the handle with a ta-- per, the same being either hollow or solid, and providing the same with a suitable spring attachment at the upper or thin end of the handle, which will fill and hold the runner firmly when the umbrella is raised, the construction and operation of my invention being described as follows:

In the case here presented, A represents a hollow tapering. umbrella'handle, made of metal or other suitable material. The lower or thick end of the handle, when made, of metal,-is packed with rubber filling B, so as to deaden its ring.

In order to provide for the runner O fitting the upper or thin end of the handle, I have a bow-spring, D, supported between two ferrules, E E. The said ferrules have also wires F extending between them, so as to assist in filling up the barrel of the runner, and thus form a bearing for it equal in diameter to that part of the handle on which the runner rests when the umbrella is closed. On the bowspring there is a catch, G, which allows the turn until the spring is compressed by the user.

As a modification in place of the wires F, I propose enlarging that portion of the umbrella-handle by having a ferrule, of wood, brass, or other material, glued or otherwise attached to the handle, so as to make it fit the runner.

It will here be observed that my umbrellahandle is not weakened, as those at present made are, by slitting the handle for the insertion of the spring. Consequently I produce a stronger stem or handle, much neater in appearance,and capable of being made smaller in size, owing to no part being cut away.

If desired, the ferrules E E can be dispensed with, and the wires F and spring D attached directly to the handle.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- An umbrella-stick having upon its taper portion the bow-spring D, provided with a lug, Gr, constructed and arranged to operate substantially as shown and described.
