ADJUSTABLE CHAIN VRENCH.

To all whom z't may concern:

Be it known that we, HARRY C. LARICK and SAMUEL M. STOUGH, citizens of the United States, residing at Frankfort, in the county of IClinton, State of Indiana, have 1nvented certainy new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Chain Wrenches; and we do hereby declare the follwing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such yas will enable others skilled-1n the artto which it appertains to malreand use the same.

rlhis invention relates to wrenches and more particularly to the type known as chain wrenches7 and has for its object to provide a wrench of this kind, which, while being of simple construction will be adjustable within certain limits.

Referring now to the drawings the present invention comprises a stock 5 bifurcated at one end as shown at 6 and having fiat side faces 7 parallel with the space between the furcations 6.

Adjacent to its bifurcated end the stock is provided with threads 8 upon its faces which are at right angles with the faces 7.

Formed upon the faces 7 of the stock there are a pair of longitudinally extending lugs 9 spaced from the sides of the faces 7 and extending inwardly and longitudinally beyond the bifurcated portion of the stock. Disposed against each side face 7 of the stock there is a plate 10, these plates extending outwardly beyond the bifurcated end of the stock and also laterally beyond the stock, and the outwardly extending end portions of theI plates are cut away at their corners upon curved lines and are provided with transversely extending teeth 11.

Longitudinally extending recesses 12 are formed in the inner faces of the plates 10 and receive the lugs 9 therewithin, these recesses being longer than the lugs to permit sliding movementof the plates with respect to the stock. Longitudinal slots 13 are formed in the plates 10 and open into the recesses 12, and formed through the stock Specification of 1etters Patent.

there are a pair of transverse openings 1/1 which register with the slots. One of the openings 14k is formed through the bifurcated portion `of the stock so that each furcation is provided with a transverse opening, the two being in alinement with each other.

Engaged through the openings 14 and also throughthe slots 18 there are a pair of

bolts

15 and 16, the former lying in the opening 1-1 which is formed through the bifurcated portion of the stock. Engaged with the ends of the bolts outwardly of the plates 10 there are cover plates 1G which extend laterally beyond the sides of the slots 13 as illustrated. Nuts 17 are engaged with the bolts to hold them in position.

Pivotally connected with the bolt 15 between the furcation 6 there is one end of a gripping chain 1S which is of length sufficient to permit it to be looped outwardly beyond the outer ends of the plates 10 and to have its free end engaged between spaced pairs of lugs 19 formed upon the end faces of plates 10 as illustrated.

Adjacent to their inner ends, the plates 10 have transversly extending registering openings 20 formed therein, and disposed to project outwardly through these openings there is an adjusting nut 2l through which the threaded portion of the stock is engaged and which is operated to shift the plates with respect to the stock. Protecting lips 22 are formed upon the plates 10 at opposite sides of the openings 20 extending over the outwardly projecting portions of the adjusting nut.

From the foregoing, it will be seen that the two plates 10v form what maybe termed a head which has jaw faces at its outer-'end formed by cutting away the corners of the plate as already explained and by providing the resultant curved surfaces with the teeth 11. It is obvious that in use the chain 18 is looped about an object to be gripped, such object lying between the chain and one of the jaw faces. After this has been done, the nut 21 is operated to cause the object to be gripped tightly between the teeth 11 and the chain.

What is claimed is 1. An adjustable chain wrench comprising a head including spaced connected plates having jaw faces at one end, said plates being provided with openings and with 1ongitudinal slots between their ends, a stock disposed at one end between the plates and extending beyond the latter at their opposite ends from the jaw faces, said stock being bifurcated at its end between the plates, an adjusting nut threaded on the stock and arranged to Work in the openings of the plates, a pin engaged through the stock and lying at its ends in the slots of the plates, a chain secured at one end between the furcations of the stock, and means for fastening the opposite end of the chain with respect to the plates.

2. An adjustable chain Wrench comprising a head consisting of spaced plates having jaw faces at one end, a stock disposed between the plates, lugs carried by the stock, said plates having recesses in their inner faces in which the lugs are slidably engaged,

said plates having also slots communicating with the recesses, a bolt engaged through the stock and lying With portions in the slots for sliding movement therein, a chain connected With the bolt and arranged for coaction with the jaw faces, means for anchoring the chain to the plates, means for holding the plates against disengagement from the bolt and means for moving the head with respect to the stock and the bolt.
