R. L. HENSLEE WRENCH Filed May 18, 1923 INVENTOR WiTNESS:
Patented July 6, 1926.
UNITED STATES R. LLOYD HENSLEE, OF KENOSHA, WISCONSIN.
WRENCH.
Application filed May 18, 1923.
The object of this invention is to provide an improved type of monkey wrench, comprising stationary and movable jaws, a handle and shank, and a threaded sleeve rotatable on the shank and engaging atoothed portion of one of the jaws, the parts being assembled in the particular manner described below.
l/Vith the foregoing and other objects and advantages in view, the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of elements described and claimed, it being understood that modifications may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings, Figure 1 shows the device in side elevation; Figure 2 is a section through the rotary and the slidable elements of the wrench, the stationary jaw being in elevation; Figure 3 is a section perpendicular to the plane on which the section of Figure 2 is taken.
The stationary jaw 10 is provided with a transverse rectangular opening 11 having communication with a longitudinal slot 12 extending through that portion of the jaw which acts as a guide for the rack portion of the movable jaw. V The movable jaw 14 is provided with shank formed with a toothed portion 15 which constitutes a rack. A handle 16 includes the wooden inset portions 17 and the reduced shank 17 of the handle passes through the bore or bearing 18 in the jaw, thence through the rectangular opening 11 and entersopening 19, also constituting a bearing for the element 17.
The reduced portion 17 has keyed thereon an externally thread-ed sleeve 20 cooperating with theraek 15.
Serial No. 639,896.
The engaging faces of the jaws are designated 21, 22, and are formed with reference to the character of the work to be done. In the drawings, I have shown smooth working faces formed of hardened steel, and designated 28. "One form or both of these face members may be detachable and renewable.
In order to guide the element 15 with reference to the handle and to take any unusual strain, I provide a strap 24:, through which the handle loosely passes, the ends of the strap being secured at 25 to the element 15.
What is claimed is A wrench comprising a jaw having a transverse opening and a longitudinal slot communicating with the opening, a jaw including a shank formed as a rack, the shank passing through the longitudinal slot, said jaw first named also having bearings in the opposite walls of the transverse opening, these opposite walls being otherwise continnous and rigid, a handle having a reduced shank rotatable in the bearings, an externally threaded sleeve on the shank of the handle and rotatable in the transverse opening and engaging the rack between the oppositely located bearings, and abutting opposite walls of the jaw opening, and a strap secured to the rack and passing loosely around the handle at point spaced from the first named jaw, for relieving wrenching strain incident to the engagement of an object by the jaws, a detachable element, and means for securing this element to one of the jaws, to provide a renewable working face portion.
In testimony whereof I aliix my signature.
R. LLOYD HENSLEE.
