A jaw plate provided with means at its rear end and on its longitudinal center for securing it to a handle, said jaw plate being of greater width at its rear end than at its front end and projecting beyond the handle and arranged so that the longitudi nal axis of the jaw plates alin'es with the axis of the handle, a pair of oppositely-acting teeth on both edges of said jaw plates, the
toothed rear edges of said plates being spaced fromthe edges of said handle, a chain having one end anchored at the end of the handle, and chain-engaging lugs on the sides of the handle near the end, said chain being adapted to cooperate with either one of the pairs of teeth on the same side of the jaw plates to grip a pipe and turn it in either direction. A handle, a pair of jaw plates secured to the handle and projecting beyond the end of the same and each having at one edge a pair of oppositely acting pipe engaging surfaces located entirely to one side of the longitudinal axis of the handle, the rear active pipe engaging surfaces of said plates being spaced a greater distance from the longitudinal axis of the handle than are the front pipe engaging surfaces, and a chain adapted to cooperate with either the front or rear pipe engaging surfaces ofsaid plates 7 to grip a pipe and turn it in either direction.
