PIPE-WRENCEL Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 11, 1913.
Application filed September 21, 1912. Serial No. 721,644.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE M. Gnarly, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Grove City, in the county of Mercer and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe-Wrenches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This is an improvement upon the pipe wrench disclosedin my Patent No. 802,187, granted October 17th, 1905, and besides having the same objects in view as disclosed in my prior patent, the present IlIlVGIltlOIl aims toprovide a more practlcal wrench from a manufacturing standpoint, the wrench consisting of parts that are easily assembled, inexpensive to manufacture, durable and highly eificient for the purposes for which it is intended.
The invention further aims to provide a chain wrench that has gripping jaws to which one end of a chain can be easily attached, the opposite end of the chain being connected to a lever supporting the gripping jaws, said. lever being arranged in a manner that permits of the jaws being shifted into engagement with a pipe to clamp the chain thereon when leverage is brought to bear upon said lever.
The invention still further aims to accomplish the above results by a mechanical construction that will be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed, and reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein V Figure 1 is a plan of the wrench as applied to a piece of pipe, Fig. 2 is an enlarged side elevation of the same with the handle of the wrench partly broken away, showing the wrench clamped upon a pipe, Fig. 3 is a similar View showing the wrench upon the nipe but in an unclamped position, Fig. 4: is a perspective view of one of the jaws of the wrench, Fig. 5 is a cross sectional view of the wrench taken on the line VV of Fig. 2, Fig. 6 isan enlarged plan of a portion of the wrench illustrating a slight modification of the invention, Fig. 7 is a side elevation of a portion of a le -:9 used in connection with the wrench shown in Fig. 6, Fig. 8 is an enlarged plan ofa portion of a wrench illustrating another modification in connectlon with the lever thereof, Fig. 9 is a side elevation of the lever shown in Fig.
8, Fig. 10 is an enlarged plan of a portion of a wrench illustrating a still further mediiication in connection with the lever thereof, Fig. 11 is a side elevation of the lever shown in Fig. 10, and Fig. 11- is an enlarged perspective view of a portion of the modified form of lever, somewhat similar to that. illustrated in Fig. 11.
A wrench in accordance with this invention comprises two jaws 1 having the inner endsthereof provided with extensions 2 that are longitudinally slotted, as at 8. The outer ends of the jaws 1 are off-set, as at l and provided with V-shaped notches 5 with one wall of each notch provided with transverse teeth 6. The walls of the notches 5 are of greater width than the body of the jaw l by reason of the outer side of said body, at the notch 5, being reinforced by a rib 7. The inner sides of the jaws l are provided with blocks or enlargements '8, said enlargements having transverse alining openings 9 to receive bolts 10 for holding said jaws in parallelism, the heads 11 of said bolts engaging. the outer side of one of said jaws and nuts 12 mounted upon said bolts engaging the outer face of the other jaw. The colts 10 are arranged in parallelism and firmly holdthe enlargements 8 of the jaws together.
or blocks 8 are concave to present a bearing surface for the cam-shaped end 14 of a lever 15, said lever being pivotally mounted between the slo-tted extensions 2 of the jaws by abolt 16 and a nut 17, said boltbeing loosely mounted in the slots 3 of the extensions 2. The lever 12, at the cam end thereof, has the sidewalls cut away, as at 18 to provide an apertured car 19 and pivotally connected to said car by a pin 20 is a link of a chain 21. The chain 21 is of the ordinary and well known type and the links forming the greater part of the chain at the outer end thereof, have the pivot pins projecting from the sides of the link, as at 22 for a purpose that will hereinafter appear. a
The inner sides of the aws 1 are provided with hook-shaped supports 23, these supports being formed integral with said jaws and the enlargements, at the off-set portion 4]; of said jaws and in proximity to the toothed walls of the notches 5. The supports are adapted to engage the project in g pivot pins of chain links placed between the aws and hold the free end of the chain during the operating of the wrench, which is as follows :-The jaws l are placed in engagement with a pipe 24; with the lever 15 in a lowered position, as shown in Fig. 3. The free end of the chain is carried under the pipe and up over the pipe 2%, the chain being placed in engagement with the supports 23 with the chain as taut as possible upon the pipe. The lever 15 is then elevated and the cam end l l thereof rides into engagement with the blocks 8. This movement of the lever 15 tightens the chain upon the pipe 24: and the pipe can be easily rotated.-
lVith particular reference to Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawing it will be observed in Fig. 3, where the chain 21 is loose, that the pin 20 is in closer proximity to the periphery of the pipe 2% than the bolt 16. Now by reference to Fig. it will be observed that the position of the bolt 16 and the pin 20 is the reverse of that in connection with Fig. 3, that is, the bolt 16 is in closer proximity to the pipe 24 than the pin 20. It is this slight'movement of the pin 20 relatively to the bolt 16 that tightens the chain 21 upon the pipe 24 and permits of the pipe being rotated by the wrench. As the chain 21 is tightened by lifting the lever 15, this movement of the lever has a tendency to force the teeth 6 of the jaws into engagement with the periphery of the pipe 24, the teeth engaging in the surface of the pipe and preventing the wrench from slipping during its use.
'I attach considerable importance to the slots 3 of the jaws, which permits of the bolt 16 shifting relatively to said jaws and in consequence of this construction a greater tightening action is obtained when the lever 1:? is shifted to tighten the chain upon the pipe.
' In Figs. 6 to 12 inclusive there are illustrated modifications of my invention, particularly in the manner of connecting the lever 15 to the side extensions 2 of the wrench jaws. As shown in Figs. 6 and 7, the extensions 2 have inwardly projecting studs or pins 24 that extend into an angularly disposed slot 25 provided therefor in the lever 15, the angularity of said slot facilitating the use of the wrench and increasing the leverage of the lever 15. In Figs. 8 and 9 the extensions 2 are slotted to receive pins 26 carried by the sides of the lever 15 and in Figs. 10 and 11 a bolt 27 and a nut 28 connect the lever to the extensions 2, the lever having an angularly disposed slot 29, similar to the lever shown in Fig. 7. In lieu of the single apertured ear 19 the lever 15 can be provided with two ears 30, as shown in Fig. 12 and a single chain link arranged between said ears.
The wrench in its entirety is made of strong and durable metal and while in the drawing there is illustrated a preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that the structural elements thereof are susceptible to such variations and modifications as fall within the scope of the appended claim.
hat I claim is I A pipe wrench comprising a pair of jaw plates ha vin the outer portions thereof offset with respect to the inner portions, said offset portions having their outer edge notched to provide a jaw, the offsetting of said plates forming shoulders, an enlargement integral with the inner face of each of said plates and flush with the shoulder of its respective plate, a hook-shaped support integral with the inner face of each of said plates and with one side of said enlargement and each having a portion flush with the shoulder of its respective plate, said supports of less thickness than said enlargements, said enlargements abutting against each other and provided with alining openings and constituting means for spacing said plates, each of said plates at its inner portion formed with a longitudinally extending slot, means extending through said alining openings and staybolts for fixedly securing these latter together, a cam lever mountedbetween the said bolts, means extending through said slots for loosely connecting the levers to the plates, said lever havingits cam end provided with an apertured ear, a chain formed of pivoted links and having the link at one end pivotally connected to said ear, and said chain having the pivots at the outer end thereof projectfrom the links.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
