WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 15, 1918.
Application filed August 26, 1914. Serial No. 858,649.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, JAMES J. RHINE-- LANDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in 7Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in wrenches and has for its object to provide a chain wrench having a reversible toothed pipe-engaging surface.
Another object of the invention is to provide a pipe wrench having a removable pipeengaging plate and means whereby said plate is reversed and xed rigidly to the handle of said wrench.
Vith the above and other objects in view which will later on be more fully explained I have invented the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is an elevational side view of my improved wrench.
Fig. 2, is view taken on line A-A of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3, is a sectional view taken on line B-B of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4, is another side elevational view of the device shown partly broken away and Fig. 5, is a detail elevational view of a plate or jaw member.
Like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the following specification and in the several views in the drawings in which 1, is a wrench handle having a screw edge 2, engaging the screw 3, carried by the sliding member 4, to which the end 5, of the chain 6, is fixed. On the opposing sides 8 and 9. of the end 7, of the handle 1, are carried plates or jaw members 10 and 11, each having toothed edges 12, 13, 14 and 15. These plates are provided on their inner surfaces 16 with right-angularly shaped lugs 17, 18, 19 and 20, so spaced apart that they form recesses 21 and 22, at right angles to one another, in either of which are adapted to snugly seat one side of the end 7 Screws 23 and 24. hold said plates 10 and 11, to the end 7, and the lugs 17 to 20, bear against the edges 25 and 26, of the end 7 and prevent any movement of the plates on said end. When the outer most toothed edge 13, becomes worn, the screws 23 and 24, may be removed and the plate removed and turned so that any one of the edges 12, 14 or 15, may become the outer edge, thus presenting a new and unworn frictional or toothed surface to a pipe. The space 27 between the plates 10 and 11, is adapted to receive the chain 6, the free end 28 of which is adapted to be engaged by the hooks 29 on the member 4, after said chain has been passed around a pipe 30, then the screw 3,l may be operated to tighten the chain 6, and bind the pipe 30 against the members 10 and 1l.
Having now described my invention, that which I claim to be new and desire to procure by Letters Patent is l. A wrench consisting of a straight shank having a bolt extending through the end thereof, a square jaw member rigidly held to said shank and upon each end of said bolt, said jaw members each having *four substantially straight toothed edges and a chain coacting with said members to clamp a pipe, one edge of each of said inembers 'being at right angles to said shank and parallel with one another to hold a pipe in alinement with said shank, said shank having one toothed side, a collar slidable on the shank, a screw on the collar engageable with said side, one end of said chain being directly secured to said collar.
 2. A wrench consisting of a straight shank having a bolt extending through the end thereof, a square jaw member rigidly held to said shank and upon each end of said bolt, said jaw members each having four substantially straight toothed edges and a chain coacting` with said members to clamp a pipe, one edge of each of said members being at right angles to said shank and parallel withv one another to hold a pipe in alinement with said shank, said shank having one toothed side, a collar slidable on the shank, a screw on the collar engageable with said side, one end of said chain being directly secured to said collar, and a trans# verse hook on said collar for direct engagement with various links of said chain.
 3. A wrench consisting of a straight shank having a bolt extending through the end thereof, a square jaw member rigidly held to said shank and upon each end cf said bolt, said jaw members each having four substantially straight toothed edges and a chain coacting with said members to clamp a pipe, one edge of each of said members being at right angles to said shank and parallel with one another to hold a pipe in alinement with said shank, said shank having one toothed'side, a collar slidable on the shank, a screw on the collar engageable With said side, one end of said chain being directly secured to said collar, a transverse hook on said collar for direct engage# ment .With various links of said chain, said jaw members being reversible on the shank whereby alternate sides thereof may be brought into cooperative relation Withithe chain. Y
