GARMENT-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 12, 1918.
Application filed. February 13, 1917. Serial N 0. 148,371.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MINNIE VON FRIELING, a citizen of the United States residing at Athol, in the county of Smith and State of Kansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Garment-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to garment fasteners and it consists in the novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
An object of the invention is to provide a fastener of simple and durable structure adapted to be applied to the waist band of a skirt for the purpose of securing the same to the band of a skirt.
lVith this object in view the fastener comprises two members, one adapted to be applied to the waist band of the waist and the other to the waist band of the skirt, the first mentioned member comprising a plate having eyes for attachment to the garment and provided with incisions at its lower edge the portion between which constitutes a spring tongue. The said plate is provided at its lower edge and beyond the incision with curls which receive the gudgeons of a pivoted member in the form-of a hook. The member which is adapted to be applied to the waist band of the skirt comprises a plate having openings through which the secur ing threads may be passed and also an opening adapted to receive the said hook member whereby the members of the garment fastener are secured together.
In the accompanying drawing:-
Figure 1 is a perspective view of one member of the fastener;
Fig. 2 is a similar view of the other member;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the members of the fastener showing the same about to be secured together.
Fig. 4 is a side view of the members of the fastener secured together.
A member of the garment fastener which is adapted to be applied to the waist band of a shirt waist comprises a plate 1 having at its upper edge eyes 2 through which the threads are passed for securing the member in position upon the band of the garment. The plate 1 is provided at its lower edge with incisions 3 and the material between the said incisions constitutes a resilient tongue 4. The plate 1 is further provided at its lower edge and beyond the incision 3 with curls 5. The gudgeons 6 of a hook member 7 are pivotally received in the curls 5 and the said hook 7 is provided with an edge portion 8 adapted to engage the inner surface of the tongue 4: and distort the same out of the plane in which it normally lies. This is when the hook member is in an open position with relation to the plate. When the hook member 7 is in a closed position with relation to the plate 1 the tongue 4 moves back into the normal position and bears against the side of the extended edge portion 8 and holds the hook member in a closed position.
The fastener also includes a plate 9 adapted to be secured to the waist band of a skirt by means of threads which are passed through the opening 10 provided in the said plate 9. The plate 9 is further provided with an elongated opening 11 adapted to receive the hook member 7 whereby the members of the garment fastener are secured together.
In practice it is preferable to use four of the securing devices, two at the back of the garment and one at each side especially if the wearer is of thin physique.
\Vhen the hook 7 is in engagement with the plate 9 and the members of the garment fastener are secured together the adjacent parts lie in close proximity to each other consequently a flat fastener is provided and the structure is void of bulging or projectin parts. Tn order to disconnect the plate 9 from the plate 1 the finger tip is inserted behind the longer or free end of the hook member 7 and the same is swung down so that its edge portion 8 comes in contact with the inner surface of the tongue 4 and springs the same out of its normal position. When the hook member 7 has been swung down to this position the plate 9 may be readily slipped therefrom.
From the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, it will be seen that a garment fastener of simple and durable structure is provided, and that the same may be economically and conveniently used for securing the waist bands of articles of apparel together.
Having described the invention what is claimed is A garment fastener comprising a plate having at an edge portion thereof incisions, the material between which constitutes a tongue which normally lies in the same plane as thatv in 'Which the body ofthe' ilate against the said tongneand distort the same" out of? its-nor'rnal p osition and out of the plane in which the body of the plate lies,
said tonguebeing adapted to engage a side surface ofan end portion of the hook them- 10 'b'e'r'to hold the same in a closed position, and a"platehavingfinthe vicinity of one edge an opening adapted to receive the said hook I'neinbefwhereby both of the olatesmay lie "substantially in the same plane when the 15 giants 'a'i'econnected together.
