ROLLER SIDE BEARING.
Application filed July 21, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IVILLIAM H. MINER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chazy, in the county of Clinton and State of New York, have invented acertain new and useful Improvement in Roller Side Bearings, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in roller side bearing.
One object of the invention is to provide a simple, relatively cheap roller side bearing for railway cars and so arranged that the roller will be automatically returned to central or normal position after each actuation.
Another and more specific object of the invention is to provide an improved roller side bearing having a roller under spring control whereby it is returned to normal position after each actuation, the springs being mounted on horizontally extended supporting rods.
In the drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is an end elevation of portions of two car bolsters showing my improved side bearing in connection therewith. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional. view of the improved side bearing and taken on the line 22'of Fig. 1. Fig. '3 is a top plan view of the side bearing proper. Fig. 4 is a trans verse, vertical sectional view taken on the line H of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a view corresponding to Fig. 2 but illustrating a different embodiment of the invention. Fig. 6 is a view similar to Fig. 3 and illustrating a still different embodiment ofthe invention. And Fig. 7 is a transverse, vertical sectional view taken on the line 77 of Fig. 6.
In said drawing, 10 denotes the body bolster and 11 the truck bolster which are pivotally connected at their centers in the usual manner. As shown, the body bolster is provided with a striking plate 12 and the truck bolster has applied thereto the improved side bearing designated generally by the reference A.
The improved side bearing A preferably comprises a base member or casting B which is riveted or otherwise suitably secured to the truck bolster, and an anti-friction roller C. The base member B is of substantially box-like form, open at the top, and has outwardly extended bottom flanges 13 through Specification of Letters Patent.

which pass the securing means, and on its interior the base member is provided with a suitable inserted tread or wear plate let on which the roller 0 operates.
In the construction illustrated in Figs. 1 to 4, the member B is providedwith parallel side walls 1515 and end walls l616, the latter having hollow bosses 17 formed thereon within which are seated the ends of springs 18-18. The springs 18 are mounted on a longitudinally extending, preferably rectangular bar 19, the latterhaving its ends supported by said bosses 17 the bar being held in proper position by nuts 20 threaded on the ends thereof. Each of the springs 18 as its inner end seated on a boss 21 formed on a follower or shoe 22, the latter being curved onits inner face as indicated at 2-8 to fit the surface of the roller (1. As shown, the roller C comprises two sections C C connected by a central section 24 of reduced diameter, thereby forming a slot or channel through which extends said bar 19. In this way, the bar 19, the springs and followers carried thereby are located below the top surface of the base member and furthermore, the bar 19 acts as a retaining means to hold the roller C in operative position.
In operation, as the roller C is rotated to one side or the other of its central position, the corresponding spring 18 will be compressed. Upon release of the pressure on the roller C, said spring will immediately expand and force the roller C back to its central or normal position. In this operation. the followers 22 will act as brakes on the roller and will thereby project the roller bodily without rotating it during the return of the roller to normal position. In this manner, the roller C is constantly shifted in its position, thereby continually changing the surfaces brought into play and prolonging the life of the roller. By making the bar 19 square and the recess in the followers 22 of corresponding shape, the latter are prevented from rotating or becoming otherwise displaced with respect to the roller. It is apparent from the foregoing that replacement or repairs of the parts may be easily effected since all that is necessary is to remove the bar 19.
Referring now to the construction illustrated in Fig. 5, the base member B is substantially the same as the base member B except that the pockets for the springs l18-l18 are somewhat lower down. The
roller G is made substantially the same, but instead of using a single bar, I preferably employ two bars 119-119. the of-these is located above and the other below the conderstood from the more detailed description given of the structure illustrated in Figs. 1
In the modification shown in Figs. 6 and 7, the base'casting B has each of its end walls provided with two hollow bosses 217217, located in the corners of the casting and within which are received the ends of four springs218'-218. The latter are mounted on a pair of rods or bars 219 having their ends supported in the ends of the base casting and slidably mounted on said rods 219 are the followers 222. Each of the latter has a central portion 223 which {its the roller C and operates in the same manner as the spring followers 22. In this construction, the roller C is made of the same diameter throughout its entire length since the central recess is not necessarybecause the bars 219 are arranged at the sides of the roller. If desired, the metal may be saved by coring the roller C as indicated at 50.
From the preceding description, it will be seen that I have provided a roller side bearing which may be relatively cheaply manufactured; wherein is employed a roller of comparatively large diameter presenting a wide bearing surface; and wherein the roller is always returned automatically to normal position after each actuation.
I claim:
1. In a roller side bearing, the combination with a retaining member, and a roller longitudinally movable therein, of means for returning'said roller to normal position after actuation thereof, said means comprising,
Copies of this patent may be obtained for a rod arranged at right angles to the axis of the roller and having its ends mounted in said retaining member and detachable therefrom, springs located on opposite sides of the roller, and spring followers guided by said rods and frictionally engaging said roller, said rod preventing removal of the roller from the retaining member.
2. In a roller side bearing, the combination with a retaining member, and a roller longitudinally movable therein, of means for returning said roller to normal position after actuation thereof, said nieans comprising, a rod arranged at right angles to the axis of the roller and having its ends mounted in said retaining member. and detachable therefrom, springs located on opposite sides of the roller, and spring followers guided by said rods and frictionally engaging said roller, said retaining member being provided with pockets within which saidsprings are seated. r
3. In aroller side bearing,-the combination with a retaining member, of an antifriction roller longitudinally movable therein, of means for returning said roller to normal position after actuation thereof, said means. comprising a rod-arranged at right angles to the axis of the roller and having its ends mounted in said retaining member, and spring means mounted on said rod and actingon said roller, said roller comprising two sections united by an intermediate section of .reduced diameter and said rod ex tending within the said two sections the section of reduced diameter being disposed between said rod and the retaining member whereby said rod is adapted to hold the roller in position with respect to the retaining member.
