GRAVITY-ROLLER SIDE BEARING.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE A. JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Gravity-Roller Side Bearings, of which the following is a full, clear. concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in gravity roller side bearings.
The object of the invention is to provide a roller side bearing for railway cars which consists of a minimum number of parts, efticient in operation and so designed that the distance between the bolsters of the car is maintained uniform during operation and the roller is adapted to be returned to nor mal position under the influence of gravity.
In the drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is an end elevation of portions of a body and truck bolster of a car showing my improvements in connection therewith. Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view of the side bearing proper and taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 33 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 2 on a smaller scale, illustrating another embodiment of the invention. And Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 2, but illustrating the position of the parts at the end'of full movement. 7
In said drawing, 10 denotes the body bolster of a car and 11 the truck bolster thereof, the same being pivotally connected at their, centers in the usual manner. The improved roller side bearing is designated generally by the reference A and, as shown, comprises three elements designated by the references B, C and D. The element B is an upper bearing plate having end flanges 12-12 by which it is adapted to be secured to the inclined under face'of the body bolster 10 and a downwardly extending portion 13 having a convex surface 14. The member D is a lower base casting also having flanges 15 by which it is adapted to be secured to the truck bolster and an upper concave surface 16, the
latter being extended somewhat abruptly upwardly at its ends as indicated at 17, to thereby limit the movements of the roller or third element C. To maintain the roller in position on the casting D, the latter is Specification of Letters Patent.

. words, the distance between the twobolsters will always be maintained uniform during operation. The full lines of Fig. 5 illustrate this operation most clearly. After the roller C has been actuated and relieved of pressure, it is apparent that it will return to its central or normal position under the influence of gravity down the curved surface 16.
In the form illustrated in Fig. 4, the various parts illustrated in the other figures have been duplicated and it is believed that the operation will be apparent from the preceding description and without entering into a second detailed description.
From the foregoing, it will be apparent that all three parts of the side bearing can be cheaply manufactured in the form of castings and the arrangement is such that the use ofsprings or other devices for returning the roller to normal position is eliminated while at the same time the distance between throughout the operation. The side bearing is relatively cheap, eflicient and positive in its operation.
I claim:
1. In a roller side bearing, the combinationwith an upper plate having a convex bearing surface on its underside of a lower bearing plate having a concave surface on its upper side, and a roller mounted on said concave surface and adapted to engage also the convex surface, said surfaces being so designed that, as the parts are shifted relatively to each other, the distance between the lines of contact of the roller with the respective surfaces will remain constant.
2. In a side bearing for railway cars, the combination with an upper bearing plate adapted to be secured to a body bolster, of a lower bearing plate adapted to be secured to a. truck bolster, said bearing plates having. opposed convex and concave bearing surfaces, and a roller interposed between said Surfaces whereby, upon actuation of the side bearing the distance between the bolsters will be maintained uniform and upon release of pressure on the roller, the latter will return to normal under the influence of gravity.
3. In a side bearing for railway cars, the combination with an upper bearing plate adapted to be secured to a body bolster, of a lower bearing plate adapted to be secured to a truck bolster, said upper bearing plate having the underside thereof inclined upwardly from each side of the center thereof,
the lower bearing plate having its upper surface inclined upwardly from the center thereof on each side, and a roller interposed between said surfaces, said surfaces being so related that the distance between the bolsters will. be maintained uniform during actuation of the side bearing, and; upon release of pressure on the roller, the latter will return to normal under the influence of gravity.
