JOHN F. O'CONNOR, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR T0 WILLIAM H. MINER, OF CHAZY, NEW YORK.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, Joux l. O'Coxx'oa. a citizen of the United States. residing at (.hicago. in the county of Cook and State ofIllinois. have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Roller Side Bearings. of which the following is a full. clear, concise. and e.\act description. referenee be ing had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this Sp 'Cifittlllflll.
This invention relates to improvenants in roller side bearings.
The object of the invention is to provide a roller side hearing more particularly adapted for u e on railwa ears and wherein is employed a roller in'conihination with spring means. the latter being 50 arranged as to return the roller to normal position after each actuation thereof.
In the drawing formin; a part of this specification. Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section of a roller side bearingenrlmdying my imprm'mnents. And Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the structure illustrated in Fig. 1, and .takcn on the line '2-2 thereof. 1
In said drawing. '10 denotes a portion of a truck bolster to which the improved roller side bearing. designated generallv bv the reference A. is pl'efelablv attached. and 11 a portion of the body bolster of a car. As will be understood. a roller side bearing is interposed between the opposite ends of the truck and body bolsters in the usual manner:
The improved side hearing A. as shown,
vcomprises a base casting 12 having lower flanges 13 by which it can be riveted or otherwise secured to the bolster and a hollow casing having side walls 113113, curved end walls 14-14, and a central upwardly extending transverse bearing portion or block 15. Mounted on the bearing 1;) is the anti-friction roller 16. the same having a peripheral bearing surface 17 adapted to engage with the upper bolster 11. and a lower caring surface 18 resting upon the iaring 15 of the base casting. Said beari asurfaces 17 and 18 are niade concentric, "high the bearing surface 18 of shorter rad SIthan that of the bearing surface 17. be normal position of the roller 16 is indicated in Fig. 1 and is-automatically maintained inthis position by spring means, the latter comprising two oppositely Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed March 30, 1917. Serial No. 158,491.
: 1 rranged headed plungers 19avhose position I is controlled by springs 20. Each of the springs 20 is mounted in a diagonally extending recess-.21 formedin the bearing 15 and each plunger 19,.e itends through its corresponding spring and through a guiding opening 22 at the bottom of the recess '21. The plungers 19 are prevented from accidental removal by any suitable means such as cotters The heads of the plangers 19 engage shoulders 21-21 on the un-,
der sides of the roller 16 and, as clearly appears from Fig. 2, the plungers and corresponding springs are off-set with respect to each other. To prevent the roller 16 from falling out or becoming disengaged from the casting 12. a pin 25 is extended therethrough. the ends of saidpin working in elongated slots 26 formed in theside wall 113 of the casting 12. To prevent aceidental displacement of the pin 25, washers 27 are applied and cotters 28.
The roller 16 is normally slightly spaced from the bolster 11 but when it comes into play, it is apparent that relative radial movement between the bolsters 11 and 10 will roll or rock the roller 16 to one side or the other. of its normal position, and the dotted lines in Fi 1 indicate the extreme movement to one side. To limit the amount of rocking or rolling movement, the curved and walls 14 of the base casting are so 10- catcd as to form stops to engage the roller, as clearly appears from Fig. 1 at the place indicated bythe reference 29. As the roller is rocked or -rotated from normal, it is apparent that one of the plungers 19 will be depressed against the action of its corresponding spring and the base casting is preferably recessed, as indicated at 30-30, to accommodate these movements of the plunge" U on removal of the pressure from too ml or 16, it is obvious that the plunger which has been depressed will react under the influence of the spring and return the r01 or to normal position. The side walls of the base casting may be recessed, as indicated at 31, to permit any dirt orother foreign matter to be readily washed out.
By employing the bearing surface 18 of short radius, the bearing may be made of relatively short length while at the same time the roller 16 is placed under oompression and bending strains on a journal are avoided, such as are incident to many types of rollerside bearings. Y
I claim:
1. In a roller side bearing, the combination with a casting ada ted to be secured to a bolster. said casting iarin a single centrally disposed transverse hearing, of a roller mounted on said hearing, the bearin surface of said roller engaging the top 0 said transverse bearing being of less radius than the peripheral bearing Surface of the roller, said roller thereby being placed under compression, and means for returning said roller to normal position after eaeh actuation thereof.
2. In a roller side hearing, the combination with a casting adapted to he seeured to a bolster, said casting having a single eentrally disposed transversely extending hearin of a roller-mounted on said casting, said roTler having two eoueentrie bearing surfaces of difl'erent radii, the bearing surface of shorter radius engaging the top of said transverse bearing of the (fasting, to thereby place the roller under eompression, and spring means mounted in the hearing of the casting adapted to return the roller to normal position after each actuation thereol'.
' 3. In a roller side hearing, the combination with a casting adapted to he set-tired of the casting and to a holster, said casting having a centrally disposed transyersely extending hearing. of a roller mounted on said casting, said roller having two eoneenlrie 'hearing surfaces of ditl'erent radii. the hearing surt'areofshorter radius ngaging the bearing surfaee oi' the eastiug, and spring means mounted in the bearing of the ens-ting adapted to rel urn the roller to normal position after eaeh actuation thereof, said spring means comprising oppositely arranged spring eontrolled plungers, the latter enaging the under side of the roller.
4; In a roller side bearing, the combination with a hollow base casting adapted to he seeured to a bolster, the base casting having a transversely extending bearing therein,
of a roller mounted on said bearing of the ens-ting, means preventing accidental disengagement of the roller from the casting. the hearing of the casting having oppositely arranged recesses therein, springs in attlll reeesses, and plungers controlled by "aid springs, said plungers normally engaging the under side of the roller to maintain the latter in normal position.
In witness that I elaim the foregoing l have hereunto subscribed my name this l th day of Mareh, 1917.
