Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 19, 1918.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN F. OCoNNoR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Side Bearings, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in side bearings.
The object of the invention is to provide a side bearing for railway cars wherein the anti-friction members are automatically returned to normal after each actuation by means supported entirely by the anti-friction members themselves and independently of any external member.
In the drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a side bearing showing my improvements in connection therewith, the
bearing being applied to the truck bolster of a car. And Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical sectional view, taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
In said drawing, 10 denotes the upper portion of a truck bolster and 11 the under side of a body bolster. As shown, the improved side bearing A is preferably attached to the truck bolster and comprises a base casting having lower wall 12, parallel side walls 13-13 and curved end walls 11-1 1.
The bottom wall of the base casting is rovided with two bearing seats or surfaces 1515 on which are rockably mounted two anti-friction rockers 16-16. The rockers 16 are held within the base casting by pins 17 which extend through the side walls of the casting and are held from accidental removal by cotters 18. Each of the rockers 16 is provided with an upper cylindrical surface 19 adapted to engage the under surface of the body bolster 11. Furthermore, each of the rockers 16 is provided at the center thereof with an opening 20, the walls surrounding and defining said opening being oppositely curved, as indicated at 21 on the lower side and 22 on the upper side. The openings or recesses 20 are just large enough to receive an elongated plate spring 23 which is extended through both of said openings. At its ends, the spring 23 is preferably curled, as indicated at at, to thereby prevent accidental disengagement from the rockers.
The normal condition of the plate spring 23 is fiat, as shown in Fig. 1. As the rockers 16 are moved to either side of normal, it is apparent that the spring 23 will be deflected downwardly by each of the rockers on one side of a vertical plane passing through the axis of each rocker and will be deflected upwardly by each of the rockers on the opposite side of said planes. This will place the spring 23 under tension and, upon release of the pressure on the rockers, the spring will tend to straighten itself and in so doin'g will return the rockers to normal position. With this arrangement, it is apparent that the spring means for returning the rockers to central normal position are carried entirely by the rockers themselves and independently of the base casting or other members. The end walls 14 of the base casting are curved in the manner shown to provide proper clearance for the rockers as the latter are moved from normal position and the side walls of the base casting may be recessed, as indicated at 25-25 to form vents for the cleaning out of dirt or other foreign matter.
I claim:
1. In a side bearing, the combination with a member having bearing surfaces for a plurality of anti-friction members, of a plurality of anti-friction members movable from normal position when actuated, and means carried entirely by said anti-friction members adapted to automatically return the latter to normal position after removal of the pressure thereon.
2. In a side bearing, the combination with a member having bearing surfaces for a plurality of rockers, of a plurality of rockers mounted on said bearing surfaces, and means carried entirely by said rockers adapted to automatically return the latter to normal position after actuation thereof.
3. In a side bearing, the combination with a casting adapted to be secured to a bolster and having a plurality of bearings formed therein, of a plurality of anti-friction members mounted on said bearings, and means for automatically returning said members to normal position after removal of the pressure thereon, said means being supported entirelv by said members.
4.. In a side bearing, the combination with mounted on said bearing surfaces, and means carried entirely by said rockers adapted to automatically return the latter to normal position after actuation thereof, said means including a spring plate extending through said rockers.
5. In a side bearing, the combination With a hollow base casting adapted to be secured to a bolster and having a pair of bearings in the bottom thereof, of a pair of rockers supported on said bearings, saidrockersbeing centrally recessed, and a plate spring extending through said recesses, said spring 15 JOHN F.
