Description

C. B. PATCH.
ROLLER SIDE BEARING.
APPLIC n. 916. ,225,677 Pamed May 8,1917.
ThE@ STATS PATENT @FICE CALVIN' B. PATCH, OF GLEN'ELLYN, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO WILLIAM H. MINER, 0F CI-IAZY, NEW YORK.
ROLLER SIDE BEARING.
Application led July 14, 1916.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, CALVIN B. PATCH, a citizen of the United States residing at Glenellyn, in the county of Dupage and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Roller Side Bearings, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this speciication.
This invention relates to improvements in roller side bearings.
One object of the invention is to provide a simple, relatively cheap roller side bearing for railway cars and so arranged that the roller will be automatically returned to centrail or normal position after each actuation.
In the drawing-forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is an end view of portions of a truck and body bolster of a car showing my improvements in connection therewith. Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical, longitudinal sectional view taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. And Fig. 3 is a transverse, vertical section taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
In said drawing, 10 denotes the body loolster and 11 the truck bolster which are pivotally connected at their centers in the usual manner. As shown, the body bolster is provided with a striking plate 12 and the truck bolster has applied thereto the improved side bearing designated generally by the reference A.
The improved side bearing A preferably comprises a. base member or casting B which is riveted or otherwise suitably secured to the truck bolster, and an anti-friction roller C. The base member B is of substantially box-like form, open at the top, and has outwardly extended bottom flanges 13 through which pass the securing means, and on its interior, the base member is provided with a suitable inserted tread or wear plate 14. on which the roller C operates.
The retaining member or base casting B has the end walls 15-15 thereof curved to correspond to the curvature of the surface of the roller C to thereby limit the movements of the latter. The side walls of the base casting are each provided with a centrally located offset portion 16 to form an enlarged pocket to accommodate the movements of a removable journal or pin 17 which extends though the roller C. Each of the yside walls Specication of Letters Patent.
vPatented May 8, 1917.
Serial No. 109,232.
of the base casting near the bottom of each of the pockets thus formed, is provided with a lug 1S to which is secured one end of a spring 19, the opposite ends of the springs 19 being` hooked over the ends of the journal 17, as clearly indicated in Fig. 3, and to prevent said springs from slipping lengthwise of the journal 17, the latter is provided with circumferential grooves to receive the springs. The side walls of the base casting are furthermore provided with openings 20-20 through which said journal or pin may be inserted and removed.
In operation, as the roller C is moved from normal position, the journal 17 will travel with it and consequently stretch the springs 19. Upon release of the pressure on the roller C, the springs will automatically return the roller to normal position, as will be understood.
I claim:
1. In a roller side bearing, the combination with a retaining member, and a roller bodily movable therein, of means for returning said roller to normal position after actuation thereof, said means comprising, a pin extending through the roller, and spring means connected at their ends to the end of said pin and also to the retaining member.
2. In a roller side bearing, the combination with a base casting having a tread portion, of a roller, a detachable journal pin extending through said roller, .the side walls of said base casting being provided with lugs on their inner faces, and springs on each side of the roller, each spring being attached at one cnd to said journal pin and at its other end to one of said lugs.
3. In a roller side bearing, the combination with a hollow base casting, the side walls being each provided with an offset portion, of a roller mounted within said base casting, a detachable journal pin extending through said roller and having the ends thereof working in the pockets formed by said offset portions, and springs connected to the ends of said journal and to portions of the base casting.
4. In a. roller side bearing, the combination with a base casting having side and end walls, the side walls being each provided with an offset portion forming a pocket on the inner side, the base casting being provided with lugs near the bottom of said ponkets, a roller mounted Within said base 'casting a journal pin extending through In witness that I elani the foregoing I have hereunto Subscribed iny name this 12th day of July 1916.
