IN VEN TOR W TNESSES:
Edward W. HUr/ouqh l ATTORNEY/5,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD W. HARTOUGH, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
SIDE BEARING FOR RAILWAY-CARS.
Application filed September 15, 1913.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD 1V. HARToUGH, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Side Bearings for Railway-Cars, of
which the following is a full, clear, concise,
and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in side bearings for railway cars.
The object of my invention is to provide a side bearing for railway cars which will be simple in construction and of effective operation.
In the drawings forming a part of this specificationFigurc 1 is an elevation of one-half a body bolster and a truck bolster of a railway car showing the side bearings embodying my invention in position thereon. Fig. 2 is an inverted plan view of one of said bearings. Fig. 3 is an elevation of one of said bearings. Fig. at is a plan view of one of said bearings. Fig. 5 is a cross section taken on line 55 of Fig. 2.
In the drawings numeral 6 illustrates a casting provided with the flanges 7, 7 by means of which the same is attached to a bolster, preferably by the rivets 8, 8 passing through the perforations 9, 9 in said flanges. The casting 6 is preferably secured to the body bolster 10 of a railway car forming the upper bearing. The casting 6 is provided with longitudinal race-ways 11, 11, preferably two in number, and preferably horizontally curved substantially concentrically with the king pin of the truck. (Said king pin is not shown in the drawing). Each race-way 11 is turned upwardly at its ends as indicated by the numerals 12, 12 in Fig. 3 of the drawings, and each is provided at one end with an opening 13 to permit the insertion of the balls ll, 14: in the race-ways in the assembling of the bearing. The placing of the upper face let of the casting 6 against the bolster 10 and the securing of the same thereto effects the closure of the openings 13 and prevents the escape of the balls 1% from the race-ways. The casting G is provided with the slots 15, 15 extending Specification of Letters Patent.

longitudinally thereof, there being one for each race-way and opening therein, the raceway slots being each of suflicient size to permit of the retention of the balls 14; within the race-ways and the partial protrusion thereof through the slots 15.
The balls 14 are preferably four in number in each race-way and are adapted to bear against the bearing plate 16, which is secured to the opposed preferably the lower or truck bolster 17 by suitable means, prefer ably the rivets 18. The balls 1% transmit the load from the body bolster to the truck bolster, and when the balls in the casting 6 are in engagement with the bearing plate 16 the relative longitudinal movement of the bolsters (as the car of which the bolsters are a part travels upon a curve) effects the movement of the balls within the race-ways, and upon the release of the pressure the balls return by gravity to their normal position. The turned ends of the race-ways permit the travel of the balls therein and by reason of the lesser total length of the assembled balls than the length of the race-ways the action just described is made possible. Thus in service the balls are always presenting new surfaces to the bearing plate, all of the balls are always in service together and the same cannot bind or crowd in the race-ways.
I claim:
In a side bearing for railway cars and the like, a single piece casting provided with a pair of concentrically arranged raceways therein which are open to one side of said casting, said casting being provided also with openings on the opposite side thereof and which is adapted to be secured against a car bolster so that said openings will be closed when the casting is in place, one opening communicating with one of said race ways and the other opening with the other of said raceways, and two sets of anti-friction balls located within said raceways, said balls being adapted to be inserted and removed through said openings.
