ANTIFRICTION-BEARING FOR RAILWAY-CARS.
Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed August 12, 1912.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN S. Woons, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Antifriction-Bearings for Railway-Cars; and I do hereby de clare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in antifriction side bearings more especially applicable for use in connection with railroad cars and consists of the matters hereinafter described nd more particularly pointed out in the appended claims. a
The novel features of my improvements are shown herein as applied to a side bearing in which the antifriction element, cont sisting, as shown, of a roller provided with trunnions, is supported in a casing attached to the truck bolster, said casing being so constructed as to permit the antifriction element to have free longitudinal movement and a limited vertical movement therein.
Referring now to the drawings :Figure l is a view representing a longitudinal central section through a side bearing provided with my invention. Fig. 2 is a view representing a top plan of the same with the wear-plate cut away to show the inner constructlon of the casing. Flg. 3 is a view rep resenting a vertical section through the bear ing in a plane indicated by the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Referring now to that embodiment of my invention shown in the drawings, indicates as a whole a casing attachedto the car body bolster 11 and containing the antifriction element, in this case a roller, 12.

The antifriction roller is illustrated in the drawings as engaging both the upper bearing plate 14 and the lower bearing plate 13, that is to say, in the position which it occupies When transmitting load.

The casing is secured to the body bolster by means of bolts 18 which pass through the said horizontal end flanges 17 and also through the wear-plate 14. The casing has upright end flanges 19, 19 for engagement with the ends of the wear-plate and the side walls of said casing have upright shoulders 20 near their upper edges for engagement with the edges of the wear-plate, said shoulposition in the casing for engagement with the top of the roller. Each side wall of the lower longitudinally which are vertically a channel to confine antifriction roller. The lower flanges constitute tracks or rails to support said trunnions when, by reason of e varying clearance between the body and truck bolsters, both wear-plates are disengaged from the roller which is then susmeans of its trunnions. As shown, the trunnions 23 are conical in form and the upper edges 21 of the flanges 22 which said trunnions engage, diverge laterally toward the center of the casing, so as to cause said roller, when freely suspended by means of its trunnions on said rails, to roll toward the center of the casing as described in Letters Patent No. 912,519. The roller is introduced into the casing before it is attached to the body bolster through notches 25 in the upper rails 21 through which the roller trunnions 23 are adapted'to pass.
The construction spaced apart to provide thus far described is fa-' miliar and forms no part of the present invention.

The end parts 27, 27 of'each spring are bent outwardly or oflset from the plane of the main length of the spring and are adapted for engagement against the side walls 15, 15 of the casing. 28 are formed on top edges of the upper flanges 21 to prevent said spring ends from being dislodged from position. The upper edges of the springs are located closely adjacent to the bottom face of the wear-plate which acts to prevent them from swinging upwardly out of the casin The springs yieldingly engage the ends of the roller in all positions thereof. When the antifriction element is transmitting load, the yielding frictional engagement offered by the springs to the longitudinal movement of the antifriction element in the casing is not noticeable. N hen, however, the antifriction element is released and no longer transmits load and particularly when it is freely suspended on its trunnions, the frictional yielding engagement of the springs with said element acts not only to retain the element at that point of its longitudinal path in the casing at which it is released, but also acts to prevent a vertical rattling movement of said element in the casing. In addition the springs prevent the roller from being turned toward a diagonal position in the casing in which it would rub or bind against the edges of the flanges 21 and 22 and thus wear and damage the casin While in describing my invention it have illustrated it as applied to a construction of side bearing in which provision is made for centering the antifriction element by gravity, it will be understood that this feature is inoperative for the purpose intended when the springs are performing their intended function and would only come into play in case the springs were broken. I have simply selected this type of side bearing as a convenient one to use in illustrating my invention and it will be apparent that no means for centering the roller is necessary where the construction of the present inven tion is employed.
While in describing one embodiment of my invention I have referred to certain details of mechanical construction and arrangement, it is to understood that the invention is in no way limited thereby except as may be painted out in the appended claims.-
I claim as my invention 1. In an antifriction bearing, in combination with an antifriction element, means for carrying said antifriction element providing free movement of said element in a predetermined line and means having constant engagement with said antifriction element in all positions thereof, said means permitting movement of said antifriction element in said line when it is transmitting load but being adapted to yieldingly lock said antifriction element against movement when it is released from load.
2. In an antifriction bearing, in combination with an antifriction element, means for carrying said antifriction element providing free movement thereof in a predetermined line and a limited movement thereof at rightangles to said line, and means having yielding engagement with said antifriction element at all times, said means permitting movement of said antifriction element in said line when it is transmitting load, but being adapted to yieldingly lock said element against movement when it is released from. load.
3. In an antifriction bearing, in combination with a carrier having a side wall, an antifriction member adapted to travel in said carrier, and means interposed between said side wall of said carrier anc said antifriction member having engagement with said antifriction element in all positions thereof, said means permitting movement of said antifriction element when it is transmitting load but being adapted to yieldingly lock said element against movement when it is released from load.
4. In an antifriction bearing, in eombination with a carrier having a side wall, an antifriction member adapted to travel in said carrier, said carrier being constructed to provide free horizontal movement of said carrier longitudinally of the carrier and a limited vertical movement of said element, and resilient means interposed between said side wall of said carrier and said antifric tion member having engagement with said antifriction member in all positions thereof, said resilient means permitting movement of said antifriction element when the same is transmitting load, but being adapted to yieldingly lock said element against movement when the same is released from load.
5. In an antifriction bearing, in combination with an antifriction roller, a casing in which said roller is suspended, said casing having side walls provided with tracks, said antifriction roller being provided with trunnions adapted to roll on said track, and yielding members interposed between each side wall and the adjacent end of said roller and having engagement with said roller in all of its positions, said yielding members permitting movement of said antifriction roller when the same is transmitting load, but being adapted to yieldingly lock said roller against movement when it is released from load.
6. In an antifriction bearing, in combination with an antifriction roller provided with trunnions, a casing in which said roller is suspended, said casing having side walls provided with longitudinally extending tracks upon 'hich said roller trunnions travel, and flat springs interposed between each side wall of the casing and the adjacent end of the roller having engagement with said roller in all positions thereof, said flat springs permitting movement of said roller lot when it is transmitting load, but being adapted to yieldingly lock said roller against movement when it is released from load.
In an antifriction bearing, in COIIllOlIlEL- tion with an antifriotion roller provided Jltll trunnions, a casing in which said roller is suspended, said casing having side walls provided with vertically spaced, longitudinally extending flanges to provide rails between which said roller trunnions are con fined, and longitudinally extending parallel flat springs in yielding engagement with the ends of said roller, said springs extending substantially the length of the path of travel of said roller and having offset end parts for engagement with the side walls of said casing.
8. In an antifriction bearing, in combination with an antifriction roller provided with trunnlons, an open top casing in which said roller is suspended, said casing having Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner side walls provided with vertically spaced, longitudinally extending flanges to provide rails between which said roller trunnions are confined, and longitudinally extending par allel fiat springs in yielding engagement with the ends of said roller, said springs extending substantially the length of the path of travel of said roller and having oliset end parts for engagement with the side walls of said casing, said springs being supported on the upper flanges, and a wear-plate closing the top of said casing and confining said springs against vertical displacement.
