Be it known that I, JOHN F. OCoNNoR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Antifriction-Bearings, of which the following is a full, clear,
concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in anti-friction bearings.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and eilicient, self-centering anti-fric,- tion bearingV of the rocker type and more particularly adapted for use as a side bearing on railway cars..
In the drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a vertical, sectional view taken through the body and truck bolsters of a car and showing my improvements in connection therewith. Fig. 2 is a vertical, sectional view taken substantially on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. And Fig. 3 is a to plan view of the side bearing, parts being broken away in order to get the figure on the drawmg.
In said drawing, 10 denotes the under portion of a body bolster of a car and 11 the upper face of a truck bolster. As shown, my improved side bearing is attached to the truck bolster and comprises, broadly, two elements, c'. e., a housing A and the antifriction element proper B.
The housing or base casting A is of hollow formation and has a plurality of flanges 12 at the bottom by which it is adapted'to be riveted to the truck bolster. The housing is of generally rectangular formation as shown in plan in Fig. 3 and has vertical end walls 13-13 and side walls 11i-14. Each side wall 14 is formed on` its interior face with a convex bearing surface, as indicated at 15, and from each end of said convex bearing surface 15 extends a shoulder or wall ,16 arranged at an angle of approximately 450 to the vertical. The bearing ledge 15 is suitably braced by the portion 17 of the side wall and ribs 18-18. Each end wall 13 is provided at its upper edge with. an overhanging iiange 19 adapted to cooperate with the element B to limit its rocking movement, as hereinafter explained. The side walls of the housing A may be cut away near the bottom thereof, as indicated at 20, to permit foreign matter to be washed out.
The anti-friction element B is in the form of a pendulum, broadly speaking. It is formed at its upper portion with a curved surface 21 adapted to engage with the body bolster 10. The element B is laterally extended so as toform flat bearing surfaces or trunnions 22-22 on each side thereof, said flat trunnions resting upon the respective convex bearing ledges 15, as clearly indicated in Fig. 1. The element B is of reduced width beneath the trunnions and'has a depending weighted section 23, there being a slight clearance between the depending section 23 and portions 17 of the side walls so that the anti-friction element will be prevented from getting twisted within the housing. The upper portion of the element B has oppositely and upwardly inclined flat sides, as indicated at 2424, and the depending section 23 has also flat faces 25-25` for the purpose hereinafter described.
The normal position o f the parts is as shown in Fig. 1 in full lines- Then the side bearing is brought into action and assuming that the body bolster 10 moves to the left as viewed in Fig. 1, the element B will be rocked to the position shown by dotted lines. That is, the element B will have its flat trunnions 22 rolled around ledges 15 and this action will be continued until the fiat face 24 engages with the corresponding inclined wall 16 of the housing and the fiat face 25 of the depending section engages with its corresponding overhanging flange 19 of the housing, by which two factors the rocking movement is limited. Upon release of the actuating pressure, it is evident that the element B will automatically return to normal because of the unbalanced position 0f the rocker, gravity acting to restore the balance.
From the preceding description, it will be seen that the side bearing involves only one movable element which can be easily `made in the form of a casting as can also the hous- Y ing, so that the entire bearing is one of comparatively small manufacturing expense; no springs or other elements likely to easily get out of order are required; and the bearing offers great strength since a large part of the the convex bearing loro ' said flat faced anti-friction element is under direct compression and bending moments are mini.
