SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent;No. 703,379, dated July: 1, 1902.

Be it known that I, HAR'nYC. BUHoUP, a citizen of the United States, residingat Chicago, in the cou11ty of Gook,State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in CarBolsters; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,in which Figure 1 is alside elevation, partly in section, of companion truck'and body bolsters embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a bottom plan View of the body-bolster?Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the truck-bolster. Fig.4 is a vertical centraltra'nsverse section of both'bolsters. My inventionrelates to the construction of bolsters for r'ai1way-cars,'and is especially dirooted to the connection vbetweenthe truck and body bolster and mayjtherefore be taken as embracing within its scope both the body and the truck bolster, inasmuch' as the construction is of a companion character, the elements of which may be reversely applied at the will of the constructor -that'is to say, the parts are interchangeable. l
In car-bolsters asat presentjcombined the swivel connections between the' truck and body bolster are oftwo characters-via, center plates and king-bolts or shallow cups and king-boltsand are located in whole or in part outside the normal'lines of thebolsters, while the horizontal forces are applied through the bodybolster, and the resistance acts through the truck-bolster, as a result. of which there is a constant tendency of the body-bolster to lift and rock on the truck-bolster, which destroys the extended contact of the bearingsurfaces, inducing torsional strains which result from such eccentric application of the forces incident to the draft and load, and, further, the rocking of the bolsters in curving produces like results. Owing to this tendency of the body-bolster to rise, the kingbolt is an essential of all center-plate and shallow-cup constructions, and owing to said center-plate and shallow cup constructions and thejresultant distance between bolsters the middle depths of the bolsters are limited with proportionate loss of strength or carrying capacity, which is especially noticeable in the body-bolster. While under the present constructions and the maximum depth allowed body-bolsters it is possible to obtain a satisfactory truck-bolster of sufficient carrying capacity, the same cannot be said of body-bolsters.
The object of my present invention is to overcome the hereinbefore-recited objections to the present construction of bolsters and in doing so to obtain a connection between the body and truck bolsters which shall insure uniform and extended support for the parts without interfering with the necessary relative movement of the bolsters and in suchmanner as to obtain an increased depth on the middle line of the bolster With resulting rigidly of the bolsters under the load; and to this end the main feature of my invention may be generally stated to consist in the combination of a body-bolster and a truck-bolster having a connection comprising counterpart members having spherical bearing-surfaces, said members being of a depth substantiallyeqn alto the radius of curvature of the lowest part ofsaid'bearing-surfaces, whereby thespace"between the bo l'sters may be redueedto'thefminimum,withoutinterfering with'thenecessary relative movements of the bolster sQunifor n and exfendedtsfupport is aiforded'theparts, lost motion avoided in all positions oflthe bolsters, whether in draft, buffing, or curving, and the depth of the bolsters (singly and jointly) increased on the centor or median line, whereby increased stiffness and load capacity results.
Afurther feature of my invention consists in compounding spherical surfaces of different radii (or concentric surfaces) whereby the continuous contact of the bearings is preserved and the depth of the engaging members increased,with acorresponding increase in the rigidity and capa'city'of the individual bolsters and stiffness of thefcombiued'bolsters under draft, bufiing, and curving forces.
There are other minor features of invention, all as will hereinafter more fully appear.
I will now proceed to describe my invention appear. The central connection of said bolsters I form of counterpart sections, one of which, the entering or included element 1, is of a projection having spherical bearing-surfaces, or, in other words a figure bounded by the curved surfaces 1 1, which if continued, as indicated in dotted lines, Fig. 1, and in full lines, Fig. 5, would result in a hemisphere, and with a radial projection or cylindrical extension 2, which preferably terminates in the curved face 1 the curved surfaces 1 1 and 1 being concentric or substantially concentric and which taken together are the equivalent of a hemisphere. Said entering or included element may be directly connected to or formed on or with either the body-bolster or truck-bolster, but is preferably formed on or connected with the body-bolster as a means of increasing the central depth and strengthening said bolster.
3 indicates the including or receiving member of the connection,whichis likewise formed with its curved interior surfaces 3" 3, corresponding with the curved outer faces 1 l of the included member 1, and with a cylindrical extension or pocket at to receive the cylindrical extension 2, but of sufficiently greater diameter to permit of the vibration of the included extension 2, said extension being closed by a spherical bottom 3 concentric with the spherical side walls 3 3 and perforated, as at 5, to permit of the escape of dust or dirt. The including member 3 of the connection is preferably located on the truck-bolster and has its lines substantially or entirely within the normal lines of the bolster to minimize the distance or space between the bolsters.
As indicated in the drawings, the included element preferably has a bearing on the bottom (or closed end 3") of the including ele ment, and this is of value where the included element is applied to the body-bolster, as the load is thereby lowered to a point between the points of support of the truck-bolster; but-said extension 2 need not of necessity have a bearing on the bottom of the including element, especially if the including element 3 is on the body-bolster, and in the latter case the clearance-hole 5 may also be dispensed with.
Owing to the form and depth of the bolster connections above described the same are preferably produced by casting, and, as before noted, may be inserted in and connected with the other members of the bolsters according to their character and manner of construction, whether angle-iron, plate, T, or I beams; but by preferenceI cast the bolsters and central connections integral, in which case the bolsters may each comprise the side pieces or, at, either. with or without flanges, and end pieces 1) I), either with or without bottom and top plates for the body and truck bolsters, and a series of intermediate strengthening ribs or websj6, disposed about the central connection as circumstances may dictate.
At the proper points on opposite sides of the center and on the opposing faces of the bolsters are cast or otherwise formed on the truck-bolsters ball-cups 7, and on the bodybolsters arc-shaped lugs or projections 8, whose cross-section has to the inner side of its flat face a curved dependent flange substantially equal to one-fourth of a circle and constituting a race-way for the ball 9, the whole constituting a side bearing substantially integral with the bolster when cast.
Owing to the peculiar construction of the center bearing, whereby all lost motion is eliminated, and the particular form of the quarter-circle raceway, the ball 9 will be given a constant spinning motion during the movement of the bolster when not otherwise rotated by the top plate.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of a body-bolster and a truck-bolster having a central connection comprising counterpart members fixed with relation to the respective bolsters, said members having spherical bearing-surfaces, the entering member having a depth substantially equal to the radius of curvature of the lowest part of said bearing-surfaces, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
2. The combination of a body-bolster and a truck-bolster having a central connection comprising counterpart members the bearingsurfaces of which are composed of segments of concentric hemispheres, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
3. The combination of a body-bolster and a truck-bolster having a central connection comprising members having corresponding concentric bearingsurfaces, the included member having an extension which intersects the including member, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
4:. A cast-metal bolster having a centrallydisposed projection provided with spherical bearing-surfaces, said central projection having a depth substantially equal to the radius of curvature of the lowest part of said bearing-surfaces, substantially as and for the pur-.
poses specified.
5. A cast-metal bolster having a centrallydisposed bearing projection compounded of concentric spherical surfaces of depth substantially equal to the radius of curvature of the greater sphere, as and for the purposes specified.
