ROLLER SIDE BEARING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 12, 1e15,
Application filed October 9, 1914. Serial No. 865,813.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known thatI, CALVIN B. PATCH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Glenellyn, in the county of Dupage and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Roller Side Bearings, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to'the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in roller side bearings.
The object of the invention is to provide a roller side bearing for railway cars of cheap construction wherein means are provided for automatically returning the antifriction roller to central or normal position each time after it has served its function as an antifriction bearing between the car bolsters.
In the drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is an elevation of 44 of Fig, 3. Fig. 5 is an end elevation of another form of roller bearing and Fig.
6 is a vertical sectional view of the structure shown in Fig. 5 and taken on the line 55 of the latter, parts of the bolsters being shown in sections in each of Figs. 5 and 6.
Referring now to Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive, 10 denotes the body bolster and 11 the truck bolster 'of a railway car swiveled at the center and provided with my improved bearings on each side of the center. As shown, the body bolster is provided with an integral dependingbearing plate 12 and the truck bolster has secured thereto my improved bearing member designated generally by the reference A. Each bearing .member A, as shown, preferably comprises a bearing plate 13 riveted or otherwise suitably secured to the truck bolster, the bearing plate 13 having spaced upstanding arms 14, 14 at each corner thereof, each pair of arms'14 on the inner and outer sides of the plate having in integral fixed tread surface 15 extending therebetween. The plate 13, between the tread surfaces 15, 15 is cut away as indicated clearance for an anti-friction roller 17 the latter having trunnions of reduced diameter on each side thereof, the trunnions 18, 18 I.
being formed integrally and preferably constituting the ends of a short case hardened steel shaft extending through the roller. Each of the tread surfaces 15 isprovided with a centrally located, longitudinally ex-' tending narrow slot 19 in which is reciprocatingly mounted a movable centering plate 20 having oppositely inclined upper tread surfaces 21, each plate 20 being limited in its upward movement by means of a pin and slot connection 22. Each plate 20 is normally pressed upwardly so as to have the tread surfaces 21 thereof in a plane above the tread surfaces 15, by coil springs 23, 23 seated in suitable sockets 24 in the bearing plate 13. The springs are held up at their inserted from the under side of the plate 13. Between each pair of upstanding arms 14, 14 extends a more or less flexible retaining clip or bar 26 to prevent the roller 17 from becoming displaced.
Under normal conditions, the plates 2O elevate the roller 17 by engaging the trunnions 18, 18 thereof .to the position shown in Figs. 3 and 4. When the ends of the body bolster and truck bolster approach each other, the roller 17 will be depressed and the plates 20, 20 forced into their recesses 19 until the trunnions are brought into engagement with the fixed tread surfaces 15, 15, the pressure being transmitted through the latter to the truck bolster. On account of the reduced diameters of the trunnions, it is apparent that the amount of surface travel of the same is much less than the surface travel of the anti-friction roller 17 when the latter is caused torota-te due to the relative swinging movement of the bolsters, which is a desirable feature in that it reduces the wear. After the roller has been rotated oif'to one side of its normal position and released, the plates 20, 20 will be lifted upwardly and the roller returned to its central normal position since the trunnions 18 will roll down the inclined tread surfaces 21,21 under the influence of gravity, thus insuring the proper positioning of the roller at all times.
- In Figs. 5 and 6, the bearing plate, antifaces and retaining" bars are or may be of the same construction as those shown in Figs. 1 to a and previously described. In- Stead of emplo ing coil springs for actuating the movable reciprocating plates 121 for centering the roller, reversely curved leaf springs 122 are employed seated in the same elongated recesses 119 as those in which the plates 121 reciprocate.
Although I have herein described in detail structures embodying my invention, the same are merely illustrative and I do not wish to be limited to the details shown and described inasmuch as I am. aware that changes and modifications may be made Without departing from the spirit oithe invention.
I claim:
1. In a roller side bearing, a bearing plate having fixed tread surfaces, an anti-friction roller mounted on said plate and having trunnions of reduced diameter adapted to bear and roll on said tread surfaces, and depressible centering plates for said roller engaging the trunnions thereof, said plates having inclined tread surfaces.
2. In a roller side bearing for railway cars, a bearing member adapted to be secured to a't'ruck and having a fixed tread surface, an anti-fricticn roller bodily movably mounted on said bearing plate, and a movable tread surface mounted on said bearing plate having inclined tread .sur-
faces normally holding said roller out of engagement with the fixed tread surface and adapted to be depressed to permit'the roller to engage the tread surface.
masons roller having trunnions adapted "to bear on said fixed surfaces, and movable tread sur-.
faces engaging said trunnions and adapted to elevate the latter, under normal conditions, from engagement with the fixed tread surfaces.
.5.-=ln a roller side hearing for railway cars, a bearing plate adapted to be secured to a bolster and having spaced, parallel fixed tread surfaces, an anti-friction roller having trunnions adapted to engage and bear on said tread surfaces, a movable plate associated with each of said fixed tread surfaces and adapted to engage the trunnions, each of said plates having inclined tread surfaces to thereby return the roller to its normal central position, means for preventing accidental removal of the roller from the hearing plate, and springs actuating said movable plates. v
