To all rwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN F. OCoNNoR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Side Bearings for Railway-Cars, otwhich the following; is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in side bearings for railway cars.
@ne of the objects of my invention is-to provide a rocker side bearing adapted to laterally oscillate to accommodate the tace of the rocker to the opposed bearing' plate. @ther objects of my invention will appear from the following description.
In the drawings forminga part of this speciiication, Figure 1 is a side elevation` Vof a side bearing embodvine,l my invention; Fig. 2 is an end view thereof; and Fig. 3 is a cross section taken on line 3-3 ot Fig. 1.
In the drawings, the numeral indicates a bolster, as, tor instance, the truck bolster, to which the base member 11 is secured. 'Ille said base member is provided with securing means, as, for instance, the lugs 12 and the rivets 13. A. cradle 14 is mountedv lwithin the base member and carries within it a rocker 15. The opposing bearing plate secured to a bolster, as. tor instance, a body bolster., is indicated at 16.
The base member comprises a bottom bearing' plate I7 and side walls ltd-18, formingr between them a longitudinal vopening to receive the cradle 14. The base member is open at its` ends, andthe side walls 18 are suitably curved about a center struck at a point lower than the edges thereof to conform to the curve adjacent the walls 19--19 of a cradle 14. The construction as described is such that the cradle cannot be accidentally displaced from the base member and it may laterally rotate therein. 'Ihe side walls 19 of the cradle are joined Yat their bottom by a plate 20, the bottom surface of which, 21, is conformed to the groove 17 longitudinally arranged in the bottoni ot the base member in order that the cradle may laterally rock upon the member 17.
On either side the cradle is provided with Y a shoulder 22 which is opposed to an undercut shoulder 23 in the base member. This may serve to limit the lateral rocking of the cradle. A bearingmember 24: is provided in the bottom of the cradle,iand upon this rests the rocker 15. The rocker is held against accidental displacement from lthe cradle by means of a pin 25 passed through the aperture 26 provided in the rocker, the said aperture being" of a larger diameter than the pin. At its ends the pin extends into a longitudinal groove 27 with which the inner faces of the side walls 19 of the cradle are providedto permit the longitudinal move-ment ot the pin therein on rocking" movement of the rocker.
In assembling the parts of this structure, the rocker is Vmounted in the cradle and the pin 25 inserted therein, there being an aperture 28 inv one of the cradle walls through which the pin may be inserted. The cradle is then inserted in the base member through one end and is held against longitudinal displacement by the block 29, which is displaceable and is provided with securing means, as, for instance, the rivet 30.
In the drawings the parts are shown in their normal position. In Fig. 1, the dotted outline of the rocker shows its position when rocked to one end of the cradle. In Fig. 3, the upper face ot the rocker is shown by dotted line in a position that it may assume when the cradle is laterally oscillated in order that the upper, face of the rocker mayv accommodate itself to contact `with the opposed bolster bearing plate asthe plane ot said plate in reference to the plane ot the tace of the opposed bolster changes in the operation of the car.
' I claim: 1. In a side bearing?,- torrailway cars. base member, a rocker supporting cradle mounted therein, the cradle being provided with a base plate having' a' lateral rocking movement upon the door of the base meniber, the base member being provided with sides having a sliding -engagement with the sides ot the cradle, and a rocker associated with said cradle.
2. Ina side bearing' for railwav cars, in
combination, ,a base member, cradle, and a longitudinally movable rocker mounted in the cradle, the base member having sides and an open end to receive the cradle, the cradle having a lateral rotary movement within the base member, land havingstops therein to engage the base member and limit the rotary movement of the cradle.
3. In a side bearing for' railway cars, in combination: a housing member, a cradle having bottom and upstanding spaced side. walls, and an anti-friction element mounted in the cradle between said side Walls, said housing and cradle having coperat'ing curved bearing surfaces adapting the cradle to rock laterally, and coperating means on said cradle and housing arranged to limit said rocking movement of the cradle.
4. In a side bearing, in combination: a
'J housing, a cradle, said cradle and housing having coperating curved bearing surfaces adapting the cradle to rock laterally, a portion of said cradle surface being disposed at the bottom thereof, and an anti-friction element adaptedl to roll bodily Within ,said
cradle, said cradle having a bearing surface for said element at the bottom thereof and above said curved portions.
5. In a side bearing, in combination: a retaining casting adapted to be secured to a truck bolster of a car, a rocker supporting member carried `by said retaining member, said rocker supporting member and retaining member having coperating curved bearing surfaces adapting the rocker supporting member to rock laterally, a rocker adapted to roll'bodily lengthwise of said rocker supporting member, the latter having an upper horizontal bearing surface for the rocker, and means for limiting the rolling move- .ment of said rocker. i
